“If you can first visualize where you want to be, if you can go there in your imagination, if you can be it today, then you set yourself up to succeed,” (Ellis 2014, p. 136). This concept helps focus attention on the details. If you can imagine where you’ll be in the future job wise, then it helps you to set goals and motivates you to reach them. Don’t design a path to reach your career; Plan your career and the path will design itself. A good start to planning your career is identifying your skills. Ellis introduces the idea of two kinds of skills, technical skills and transferable skills. A technical skill is something that must be learned through training or school. You must be taught how to do it for the skill to be technical. “Transferable skills are abilities that help people thrive in any job—no matter what technical skills they have,” (Ellis 2014, p. 138). An example of a transferable skill would be listening or communicating. These skills are also needed for the job I want to have. As a game designer, you must communicate with other members of the team and can listen to what they say. Although these are skills that will help me, I also need technical skills like 3D modeling and level design. When you are asked what job you plan to have, be able to name several options. Personally, I know of that the position I want is called a game designer. There can be more than one name for the same job, (Ellis, 2014). Be able to name the company you want to work for as well. The one and only gaming company I want to work for is Naughty Dog. They have the perfect, non-corporate environment that I prefer. However, if I were to be self-employed, I should name the product that I would sell, (Ellis, 2014).
