Every individual has his or her own opinion of what a good or professional nurse/physician is. I personally want my nurses to be knowledgeable and skilled. Nurse who is more interested is serving soft drinks and fluffing pillows is not one for me. Nurses should be able to recognize and respond to emergencies at all times. I perceive professionalism as well educated, trained, and skilled nurse. I do not believe just because a person has been a nurse for a 20 or 30 years makes them a good nurse. Nurses are considered to competent once they pass their nursing boards; however, that is not correct either (Hutson, 2014). Too often nurses and doctors only look at the numbers on a machine and not at the patient. For nurses to expand their knowledge, competency, and skills they must be willing to continue their learning process (Hutson, 2014). A professional nurse, continues their education, have certifications, and continuously work to improve their skills. Patients and, when necessary family members should be active in one’s health care. However, ineffective communication is an issue between the providers and patients.
