World Today The world today, more than ever, is a steadly shrinking planet, as new technology allows us to cross boundaries and attempt feats that were once only dreams of science fiction novelists. Yet, even as progress roots out old ways of life, and new technology makes obsolete time honored traditions, we never lose sight of the rich cultures to which our earth is home. Even today, the world is still a colorful and vibrant place, filled with a myriad of exotic cultures, each with its own unique and enthralling history and traditions.
It is this increasing charm and fascination with the ancient that invariably draws the curiosity of outsiders. This fact has even permeated itself throughout my life. No matter where I go and

Before and especially following any significant trip, I repeatedly face the same line of inquiry, “What is the Middle East like?”. To this question I have often respond with a casual and simple answer, “It’s okay”. Upon my return from the Middle East this past summer however, I began to feel this response horriblyinsufficient, and I decided to contemplate a more meaningful answer. I quickly came across amental block as I started thinking to myself, how could I ever possibly convey the sights, the sounds and the feelings of this region, so vibrant and culturally rich, to anyone who has not had the fortune to see it for themselves? Despite these difficulties, I began to draft my thoughts. In an attempt to bring in perspective the rich and inspiring heritage of the region, I progressively began to picture my most recent vacation to Arabia, and letting my memories take charge, I began describing to the best of my ability the highlights of my …show more content…
The smells as one sifted through the open spice market drugged one to ecstasy, while the rank stench that emanated from the livestock market was equally odoriferous.
The lavish feasts that poured from the kitchens of the Middle East were as fulfilling to devour as they were to smell, and there is nothing like a whole roast lamb with spices and the proper condiments to make one roll over in content euphoria. The same foods and smells I experienced while living there were just as plentiful on my recent vacation as they have always been, and just as delightful to enjoy with friends and family as always.
This is the portrait I now like to give when people ask me that same inquisitive query. I have always been a part of America and Arabia, and these two diverse cultures have always been a part of me. My unique experiences have gifted me with a
Some people call Space “The Final Frontier” but at one point all land west of the Mississippi was considered the frontier. Humans are curious people, sometimes too curious for our own good, but when we find something new we always explore and why would it be any different with space. When we explore the out reaches of space will no longer seem so small or insignificant. The idea of one day unlocking all of the Universe’s secrets, solely through our own advancements as a people, is what gives me that sense of
Genghis Khan’s leadership, the Mongols were simply a group of diverse tribes. Constantly hostile towards China, the Mongols went through the Bronze Age and Iron Age as separate tribes. However, during the 12th and 13th centuries, this would change. Thought to be born in 1155 or 1162, Temujin (later known as Chinggis and Genghis Khan) was one of six siblings and a violent nomad. Coincidently, he had a blood clot in his arm - to the Mongols, this was a sign meaning he was destined to become a great leader.
Throughout the 1100s, there was a constant war within the Mongols as to who would become the Khan, which is an official title that is given to the people’s ruler. The film, Mongol, is all about how Chinggis Khan, or Genghis Khan as many know him as, rose to power. The film starts off with Chinggis Khan as a prisoner of the Tangut kingdom where he then reminisces on his early life where he was known as Temujin, since he was yet to become the Mongol’s khan. The film follows Temujin from his life as a child to the moment right before he became the official khan of all the Mongols. With this being said, the film is not as historically accurate as one would think.

...tinople also made sense, because first it was located on a peninsula, which made defending the capital easier. Secondly, since the capital was located on the frontiers of the Empire, reacting to external threats became much easier(The Fall of the Roman Empire). Even though moving the capital and splitting the Empire was ill advised for the Western Roman Empire, it did save the Eastern Roman Empire(Byzantine Empire) for the next 1000 years(The Fall of the Roman Empire).
The Roman Empire was, without a doubt, the most powerful governing body in the Mediterranean that ever was. At the peak of the Roman Empire, in the mid part of the first century, it covered about half of Europe, much of the Middle East, and the north coast of Africa. So why did Rome fall? There was not one cause that led to the fall of Rome, but many things occurring in succession to each other.
The next problem was the political corruption. This was especially present in selecting a emperor; unlike other emperors Rome never had a set way to delegate that is going to be emperor. The old emperor, the senate, or the Praetorian Guard, and the army. The Guard eventually ended up gaining complete control of the choosing of the emperor. The Guard started to take the highest bid for the emperor because of their greed.
Social apathy was beginning to spread throughout the empire. The majority of citizens were neglected forcefully excluded from political participation, rejected from the army and had no other choice but to live off the land (Document 4). This oppression towards the people caused many citizens to feel like the old civilization was not worth saving (Document 4). Furthermore, corruption and turmoil grew in the political system of Rome. From 235-285 C.E Rome lost eight emperors to assassinations (Document 1). The government’s desire for money became more important than its job to protect its citizens. In Rome wealthy lawbreakers go unpunished, while the poor were forced to undergo their chastisement (Document 6). The state was beginning to lose three virtues it was built on: patriotism, discipline and devotion to duty. The lack of these three values weakened the social and political systems.
A little over 2000 years ago Rome was one of the most important cities in the world. With its many emperors and armies it had gained control of a vast area of modern Europe known as the Roman Empire. Historians have linked several factors which led to the demise of the Roman Empire mostly associated with each other. Some of the reasons were the arrival of Christianity, lead poisoning and poor public health, political corruption with high military expenses, high unemployment with a rise of inflation and taxation in the economy. It was a combination of these factors which eventually led the final fall of the Roman Empire in 476 AD when the last emperor Augustulus Romulus was overthrew by a Germanic Guard named Odoacer.
Genghis Khan showed early promise of becoming both a leader and a fighter. Through the whole of his childhood upbringing Temujin was exposed to an array of extremely violent, unpredicta...
going on when, America, wanted to take over Vietnam for the better. Fowler wants to keep neutralization and provide peace and freedom. In the novel The Quiet American, Pyle may be right that if America does not provide force and will not be able to help, they will still make no progress because the Vietnamese would push away. Pyle strongly believes that he has to influence the Vietnamese with their American appeals by force when in contrast, Fowler contradicts that America should remain neutral and consider the view of the Vietnamese people. It is for this reason Fowler is more justified over the fact that he does not want to take anything away from the citizens of Vietnam.
Rome was massive. It is known to be the first city that held one million citizens. It was also strong. The army was huge, and Rome seemed invincible, but unfortunately, Rome started to molder. Political aspects, economical issues, deadly diseases, and ruthless foreign invaders all eventually lead to the fall of the seemingly undefeatable Western Roman Empire.
An Empire that is too big is not always for the better because there are more problems to be dealt with. In the case of the Roman E...
Recently a new trend has taken up Wall Street. Savvy broker firms have realized that the market is probably controlled by some rules, and those rules have to be found to make more money with the least risk. They hired many mathematicians to look for any formulas that would seem to express the market. Those analyzed previous market trends and used laws of statistics to try to predict the “future” of the market. The funny thing is that at times this approach actually worked. It yielded a slightly more than fifty percent accuracy, and that was enough. (When dealing with tremendous amounts, even a small percentage is not meager.)
In today’s society, women are empowered, independent, and have freedom on their parts to live their life freely. This is definitely a positive aspect of the modern day society, however, this may not be how it always was. Travelling back in time, to the Red Hook community of Brooklyn, circa 1950s, we are able to see the societal expectations of a women at the time through Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge. The two female characters, Catherine and Beatrice, play crucial roles in the play and are essential to the tragic storyline of Eddie and his downfall. However, Arthur Miller has skillfully been able to show the lives and societal expectations of the women at the time, and to portray how women should not be treated. Both Catherine and Beatrice face different particular issues, but in the end are treated similarly as women. First, we shall look at Catherine and Beatrice and their individual parts in the story. After this, the portrayal of women and femininity in Red Hook at that time will be explored in reference to Catherine and Beatrice.
