The Importance Of Profession Of Nursing

Nursing is a profession that requires people built of strong will and never-ending compassion. It is a profession of a wide variety and many areas to specialize. In nursing, however, the controversial topic of whether newly graduated nurses should be able to specialize right away or have medical-surgical or critical care experience first is often a topic up for discussion. Many believe that a year or two in a medical-surgical setting before specializing is needed as it helps build a nurse that is proficient in multiple skills, however, others believe that specializing in an area that the nurse is passionate about is better as it develops a nurse as an expert in that specialty. It’s often seen that new graduates want to go directly into a specialty, while employers would like them to have experience in a more general setting first.

Meaning, if a nurse is graduating and knows wholeheartedly that they want to work in pediatrics, but the facility requires that they have at least a year experience first, then there is a higher chance the nurse with experience nurse burnout and consider changing careers. By being able to go directly into the specialty they want, the nurse has a higher desire to learn and higher occupational commitment as they enjoy their job. This then leads to the nurse focusing on improving their skills to being not only competent but far past it as they would focus on the skills and knowledge specifically needed for their specialty. Nurses enjoying what they do on an everyday basis are going to work harder to make sure that they are not only doing their job correctly but to the best of their ability as it is something they are passionate about (Numminen, et al.,
