For this assignment I had the pleasure sitting down with Emily Petermeier and getting an insight on what the real nursing world is like. Emily graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing in May 2015, and got a job at Fairview East Bank Hospital. This interview really helped me understand what it is like to be a new nurse and the dedication that I have to have going through nursing school and throughout my career. I prefer to work closely with patients and build that connection with them.” This answer didn’t really shock me all that much, I think its really common for people to go for pre med and then find/figure out that they wont be able to really establish and connect well with the patients. My next question was simple and asked, “Was it your dream to always become a nurse, and did anyone have an influence on your decision?” Emily explained that she has always wanted to work in the medical field, but didn’t really know which area or career path until college. She also went on to say that both her mother and sister are nurses, but her mother had the most impact because Emily was able to be in the hospital a lot during high school and started volunteering when she was young. Knowing Emily’s background it doesn’t surprise me that she went for nursing, there is clearly a family history of it. Also, with Emily volunteering at a young age she was really exposed to the hospital setting which would help her choose a career. I just got a volunteer position at St. Paul Children’s Hospital which I am very excited for because I will be able to experience the hospital setting and really see why Emily is so excited about nursing. With Emily graduating from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing, I knew I would be getting useful and excellent advice from her. The first most important question I asked was, “What was the hardest part about nursing school?” Emily commented that the “clinical preparation worksheet were time consuming given you had to start on the worksheets a day before the clinical, then go to clinicals early to look up information, then after spend several hours looking up different medications and lab values.” With this being said I am definitely not surprised because I know that the nursing program is very time consuming as a whole, and it is a very competitive program. However, I am so excited and driven for this challenge because in the end of all the schooling, I will have achieved one of my biggest goals. The next question asked, “Do you have any advice to someone like me that is going into the nursing field?” Emily confidently answered with, “Keep an open mind about all the different specialties. Especially during school, be willing to try different areas and working with different populations.” I am really glad that Emily gave me this advice because I am so interested in pediatrics, but I also need to keep in mind that I need to experience working with different
My interest in nursing is fairly new; I had not explored the potential that a nursing career can offer. I became familiar with nursing professionally after becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant. While working with patients, side-by-side with nurses I became enamored with the potential of a nursing career. I now have a rewarding career working as a Medical-Surgical nurse on a Medical University Hospital floor that specializes in Transplant, Nephrology and Urology. On 8/10/16 I met Mr. Abraham at the office of Dr. Yacisen. Mr. Abraham arrived with his mother. He wore the brace to the right leg and used a cane to ambulate. Mr. Abraham said his left shoulder has improved dramatically since he started physical therapy. An x-ray of the shoulder was taken and did not show any defect. The right knee still had slight swelling which Mr. Abraham said goes down when he has the brace off. Examination showed the MCL was scarred down. The patella was stable. Dr. Yaisen said he wants Mr. Abraham to really work more aggressively in physical therapy. He demonstrated and had him repeat back new exercises to do at home. Dr. Yacisen also wants him to remove the brace and discontinue use of the cane. He told Mr. Abraham unless he gets aggressive with building the
For my informational interview I spoke with a nurse who has experience working on a medical surgical unit in a hospital setting. She has been a nurse for 10 years. She also has her bachelors degree in nursing. I started my interview by introducing myself and explaining what my assignment was about, and how she could help me tremendously with answering some questions regarding her nursing career, and what she does as a medical surgical nurse.
I wanted to fill my time and what better way to do that then by bettering myself. With starting this new journey, I knew I would finally pursue my dream of becoming a Registered Nurse. There are few jobs in today’s world that are essential to our society and being a nurse is one of them. Diane Marks Nurse Clinician of Pediatric Allergy at the Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg Manitoba granted me the privilege of sitting down to discuss her career . Through this interview I was able to gain perspective on how being a pediatric nurse encompasses more than what is written in the job description. It is more than just needles and antibiotics, but many times it means being a mother, a sister, a friend, a councillor, and many other roles in the patient’s life.
During my undergraduate years in college I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to become when I “grew up”. I would study various professions and never felt like anything fit for me. One evening I sat down with my aunt, a nurse, and I was talking to her about how I couldn’t decide on a major and how frustrating it was to be in college feeling as if I did not have any direction. She looked at me with complete surprise on her face and said, “You aren’t applying for nursing school?” I stared at her for a moment because I was confused as to why she would ask me that. She chuckled and proceeded to tell me that she had always assumed that I would be a nurse because I spent several years of my life taking care of my 3 year old cousin who had cancer. For three years I was his caregiver and it had never occurred to me that I could make a living caring for people. I then spent countless hours researching nursing and what exactly nurses did. This was it! I had finally found what I wanted to do for the rest of my life! It took no time at all to know that I wanted to specialize in pediatrics. Throughout my clinical experiences in nursing school I have immensely enjoyed working on the Pediatric units as well as the Nursery. When I began this journey I knew that Nursing was all I wanted to do and in order to succeed and do well in nursing school, it was going to require a ton of devotion and sacrifice. Nursing school did not come without its challenges, not only did we have to deal with going to class, clinicals, studying for exams, but we also had to add in the factors of jobs, family, marriages, children, sickness and our daily life. But our instructors encouraged us and pushed us to keep going, and for that we are grateful because we all made a decision to stick with it, and here we are today. Saying that you are a registered nurse is a broad statement. Registered nursing is a job that has many aspects. Registered nurses work in many different settings and they carry out many different routines. As a registered nurse you could be exposed to many different opportunities. My goal is to be a registered nurse but, I need to learn a lot. Becoming a being a registered nurse requires a lot of hard work and effort but, if I focus on my goal I will be able to achieve it.
The profession of nursing has both positive and negative effects on the well-being of nurses, which can lead to learning opportunities for those that are new to the profession. To receive an accurate depiction of the nursing profession, an interview with a currently practicing nurse is conducted and the challenges that they face will be analyzed with the intent of exploring different strategies that can be used when coping with these issues. The nurse that was interviewed stated that she has been in the nursing field for the past seventeen years; with the past ten being in the role of a nurse practitioner (Personal Communication, October 26, 2016). The interdisciplinary course is a core requirement in the after-degree nursing program as it incorporates the principles of self-directed learning and promotes critical thinking, which is an essential element in nursing practice. As a final year nursing student, I believe that knowledge from this course will enhance my ability to provide patient-centered care.
In my medical career, I have been privileged to work alongside some of the most professional, dedicated, knowledgeable and compassionate nurses. I have seen first-hand the difference that they can make in a patient’s life and their family, during those unfortunate times when sickness and injury can be so overwhelming. The appreciation and respect that I have for nurses, as well as their indispensable contribution to the health care system, is what encourage me to pursue nursing as a profession.
My journey to become a nurse began when my youngest sister was diagnosed with synovial cell sarcoma. We spent months at the hospital by her side throughout her chemotherapy, radiation and several surgeries. Being around all those families and children in the hospital when many had illness's much worse than hers really opened my eyes to how much of an impact healthcare workers make on so many people’s lives and their families lives too. Although the situations that those children were in seemed so terrible, they had such joy and hope in their eyes.
My reasons for selecting a career in nursing stem directly from my desire to help our prospering population and community. This career appeals to me because it embodies what I strive to become, a person of influence, a guide, a respected adult, a mentor, and a person that can be trusted and looked up to with great passion. Another reason for selecting a career in nursing has a lot to do with my current job position at Generations Elder Care. Working with the elderly community at this personal care home has enriched my life in many ways, including one for my passion of learning more about the nursing field.
