Online and Social Media Conduct of the Army Soldier Soldiers are to be professionals both on and off duty. We would expect them to be professional both on and offline. Social media plays a huge role in most people’s lives, whether it is to connect with family or complete strangers. Social media and internet use has grown exponentially throughout the years (see Appendix for the graphic of the global digital report for 2018). Facebook reported 1.94 billion active user accounts a month (Popper, 2017). That is over a quarter of the world’s population. Moreover, Soldiers have been using social media websites such as Facebook for nearly 20 years. This paper will examine the online and social media conduct of today’s Army Soldier.

When a new mother has a question about a weird cough her infant baby girl has, she may turn to social media before interacting with a medical professional. She may even be able to interact with her child’s pediatrician over a social media venue. There is so much information spewed throughout social media. Sometimes it can be overwhelming. Retail marketing has an even bigger role in social media than ever. Moreover, businesses thrive from consumer reviews that are readily accessible at the touch of a button. Consumers may decide to buy or not to buy a product based on what the buzz is on social media. We have never had so much information readily available since the beginning of time. When you were a child and wanted to research a topic for an essay, you may look it up in an encyclopedia. Today you might use an interface, such as Google. We have so many tools to use. We would be fools not to utilize this mass amount of information. You can use it to connect with family and friends, review a product that you just purchased, learn how to replace a part on your lawnmower, or even self-diagnose an ailment.
