According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, “a master’s degree program may be the first formal educational opportunity for a student to integrate prior and current learning” (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, n.d.). In order to learn how formal education can integrate into daily work, I conducted an interview with a current nurse who has completed a master’s degree in nursing with emphasis in leadership. The interview between an already prepared master’s prepared nurse was taken place verbally. Starting from an associate’s degree in nursing, the master’s nurse first started her career in a medical-surgical unit, learning the basics of nursing at a level one rural hospital. After about 2 years of experience, the nurse wanted to be more specialized and proceeded to work as a post-partum nurse at this same hospital. She then decided that although she was in the right specialty of woman’s health, labor and delivery would be more suited to her career. Labor and delivery was her career path from then on. Once the nurse had moved to the greater phoenix area, she continued to pursue labor and delivery at a level two hospital, advancing her skills and techniques to fit more high risk patients. After five years of being a staff nurse, an opportunity came to be a clinical manager of that labor and delivery unit. She is currently the clinical manager for 2 years now and continues to fulfill that roll as she transitions from working nights too days. As a teen mom, the master’s nurse wanted to pursue her nursing career when her first child was born. She started her associate’s degree at Pima Community College. Being a leader in the unit pressured the nurse to seek higher education. The nurse then completed her baccalaureate education at Western Governor’s University. Once this was finished, she decided after a year of being an official leader, she wanted to pursue her master’s at Western Governor’s University. The master’s program is designated as a Master’s in Nursing with an emphasis in Leadership and Management. This program is a work at your own pace program, which can be completed in as little as 6 months and as much as 3 years. It consists of competency based education classes such as assessment skills of an advanced practice nurse, leadership development, principles of management, and much more.
