Nursing Out of all the careers, nursing is in the top fifty well-known careers. For everyone going into a nursing major, within six months of graduating they have a job. Being a nurse is a career with high expectations. Also when looking into a nursing career there will always be a job. Due to the responsibilities that come with the job choice, take into consideration the history, skills and education, and the positive and negative aspects of this profession. First, the history of nursing goes back to before 300 A.D. (“Biography”). Nursing first started at the height of the Roman Empire. There are even skills to help get you started as a nurse. Some general skills a nurse needs to have or acquire is; communication, ability to pay attention to detail, confidence, and adaptability (“Work it daily”). More specific skills would include; compassion, ethics, critical thinking, stamina, and commitment to new developments (“Work it daily”). All of these skills are important, except some require more from you. For instance, the general skills are skills that should come to you when working with patients. As a nurse you should pay attention to details of your patient that way nothing is wrong, or if something is you inform the patient and the family. Communication, confidence, and adaptability are key to a nurse's daily job because they use those skills every day. The more specific skills needed are those that you learn from your day to day experiences. All of these skills or traits are important but there are also six key skills nurses need to have to help progress their careers. Skills being; attention to detail, desire to learn, critical thinking, flexibility, and effective communication (“Ericksen”). Those five skills may be the same as those above but these are the key components to have when first starting. Positive aspects range from general benefits to saving someone's life (“Steve Berman”). Some major perks of being a nurse are; you can accomplish different things in your career, money is good, and it keeps you in shape (“Steve Berman”). Along with those you also have; the ability to travel, and job security (“ Steve Berman”). With job security that is just ensuring that in this occupation there will always be jobs. Some other key perks of being a nurse are; the job is exciting, rarely boring, and the pay is high (“ Kara Masterson”). The final two positive aspects of being a nurse include; the job opportunities are infinite, and there's always room for improvement (“Kara Masterson”).
