The term ‘leadership’ has no definition, for it is defined different ways in the minds of people. A leader will ingrain a sense of positivity and necessity towards the set goal using the power of written and spoken word. The qualities of a leader differentiate between between each society. At the height of its power (16th-17th century), the Ottoman Empire spanned three continents long. The Ottoman Empire controlled Southeastern Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa. It contained twenty-nine provinces and man vassal states, some of which were later immersed into the empire, while others were allowed other types of sovereignty during the course of several centuries. The empire was at the center of interaction between the Eastern and Western worlds for six centuries. With Constantinople as its capital city, and large control of lands around the eastern Mediterranean during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. Suleiman overruled the Ottoman Empire from 1520 to 1566. It is remarkable that though in Turkey he is distinguished only as the law-giver (Kanuni), in European history he is known by titles such as the Magnificent. Suleiman had no noteworthy rivals and was one of the most fortunate of the sultans. From his father he inherited a well-organized army, a disciplined army, and a sufficient treasury. Being raised in such a political environment, Suleiman would grow up to be the embodiment of all the excellent qualities of his Father’s talented generals, admirals, and viziers. Suleiman was a generous man even as a child. As a young boy, he befriended Pargali Ibrahim, a slave who later became one of his most trusted advisers. I believe the silent leader is the more dangerous one. The soft spoken man thinks more, communicates more complex thoughts, takes the time to view life and create intelligent commentary. The silent leader needs to be outspoken though in order to get his point across. I do not agree with Suleiman’s tactics in using intimidation to reach his people. Like Mandela, I believe in showing compassion towards the people in order to get them to agree with the message. I am the quiet yet outspoken leader, even though that’s an oxymoron. Both of Mandela’s and Suleiman’s leadership tactics have worked throughout, but I connect more with Mandela’s message of peace. The ideology of power and leadership is defined in many different ways throughout history. The generalization has a common definition but each individual aspect is vastly different for each individual.

A leadership theory is a clarification of some features of leadership; theories have practical importance as they are being used for better understanding, anticipating, and controlling successful leadership. Hence, the main principle of any theory is to inform practice(Lussier and Achua 2009). Leadership theories could be classified into eight main categories: Great man, trait, behavioral, contingency, Situational, Participative, Relationship , management (Cherry 2010).
Leadership is strength. Though it is strength, what makes a leader? Is a leader someone who is in front of the line in the game ‘follow the leader’? Technically yes because that is their name in the game, but this essay isn’t about a game. It is about reality. Is a leader made up of a variety of skills, talents, morals, and values? Or perhaps a leader is someone who tells people what to do? Or maybe a leader is someone who can make a difference? To an extent, a leader is built up of all of those possibilities. A leader is someone with a variety of skills, talents, morals and values, and someone who knows how to make a difference, and someone who can guide people into doing what needs to happen. Throughout the history of the world, there have been countless examples of triumphant and unsuccessful leaders whose ideas and forms of governing a nation, state, or community of people all varied considerably. Niccolo Machiavelli, an Italian diplomat and political philosopher from the late 1400’s, taught that in order to be a good leader, your people must fear you. He also believed that leaders, “must have no other objective, no other thought, nor take up any profession but that of war” (Machiavelli). While Lao Tzu, a 6th century philosopher and the father of Taoism taught that good leaders must, “learn how to follow” their people and trust that they will make the right decision (Tzu). I believe Machiavelli’s idea of ruling with fear is not a good one and that; “simplicity, patience, and compassion” are the greatest values a leader could have.
Introduction According to the Oxford Dictionary, a leader is defined as “the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country” (Oxford Dictionaries, 2013). Though there is a definition for what a leader is, people still have different ideas about what a leader should be and how he or she should act. There has never been a concrete idea of what a leader is; the only thing we know is that this person is the one in charge of the unit. We look at characteristics of those people we see as leaders and use those attributes to compare other people to see if they are able to be as good as, or even better than, those aforementioned leaders. We have to keep in mind that in different situations, leaders must do different tasks which indicates the need for different qualities.
The idea of approaching leadership from the standpoint of values has been echoed in several studies. O’Toole (1995) compared and contrasted contingency and situational approach to leadership with value-based leadership. He stated that all leadership styles eventually enforces the individuals to follow what their leader commands them to do rather than focusing on what is the will of the followers – this he called as disrespect for the individuals. It is important for the leader to understand, why people are resistant to change in reality and must make a personal commitment to overcome this resistance to changing environment or culture. The impact that CSM Hambrick has had on my career and leadership philosophy is immeasurable. His far-reaching legacy is one of confidence, sound judgment, and empathy.

According to this definition of leadership, it suggests that every individual has a likely chance to become a leader. Every time one voices an opinion or an idea, they influence others in some form of way, therefore, they function as a role of a leader. Lewin, Lippitt and White (1939) suggest that there are three types of leaders: authoritarian, democratic and laissez-faire (Lewin, Lippitt, & White, 1939). Authoritarian, or autocratic leadership, is a leader that dictates all the decisions within a group of individuals (Lewin et al., 1939). On the other hand, the Laissez-faire leader allows the group members complete freedom without the leader’s participation in any of the decisions (Lewin et al., 1939). This essay will portray qualities and characteristics of leadership that promote organisations to be person centred. Leadership has been described as a process that is exercised over others. It can be seen as a process of influence. It is more than an external process. Leadership is the ability to motivate people and mobilize resources to accomplish a common goal. The qualities and characteristics that I will identify are communication, honesty, listening, empathy, healing, commitment to the growth of people and building community. I will discuss how effective leadership can improve the performance of human service organisations by drawing on these characteristics and qualities.

Leadership is defined by not only traits but actions as well. Leaders are inspirational, trustworthy and charismatic. Many people may think a manger is leader. Although leadership and management go hand in hand, they are not the same. Everyone has their own beliefs about what characteristics an effective leader should have. To me, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and having a vision are few characteristics of becoming an effective leader. A leader is not only born, but made. Some are born as leaders or some are made to be leaders.
