Leadership is strength. Though it is strength, what makes a leader? Is a leader someone who is in front of the line in the game ‘follow the leader’? Technically yes because that is their name in the game, but this essay isn’t about a game. It is about reality. Is a leader made up of a variety of skills, talents, morals, and values? Or perhaps a leader is someone who tells people what to do? Or maybe a leader is someone who can make a difference? To an extent, a leader is built up of all of those possibilities. A leader is someone with a variety of skills, talents, morals and values, and someone who knows how to make a difference, and someone who can guide people into doing what needs to happen. They can’t. A leader needs to always know their destination even if they have to change course a few times. Goals are destinations. Like Marcus Buckingham says, the future in and of itself can be a goal, “whenever a person strives to make others see a better future, there is leadership” (pg 63). Leaders constantly have to be setting goals, whether big or small. Another thing leaders need to have is morals and values. Part of being a leader is leading by example. Someone who wants to help decrease the number of deaths by drug overdose can’t exactly lead other people to follow his cause if he himself partakes in illegal drugs on a daily basis. That goes along with morals and values. A person of good morals and values is someone that others can’t help but feel drawn to, and want to be like. In the Army, there are seven Army values that come together to spell “LDRSHIP”; loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. The Army values are a good set of values to live by, even if someone isn’t in the Army. Values and morals go hand in hand.
