Why students choose nursing school and how that
correlates with personal reasoning.
It is believed that nursing students choose the nursing profession because they have a family member or a person who is close to them who is in the healthcare profession, motivating from work-related reasonings and they have “an altruistic desire to help others” (Angus. Jan E. Hall, Linda. Peter, Elizabeth. Price, Sherri Lynn). Only one of these reasons are similar to my personal reasonings as to why I chose to become a nurse. Many students choose nursing school because of family members or people who are close to them that are in the healthcare profession (Andersen, Molly. 2013). In the article, one of the first lines states “For some of our students, the decision to pursue a career in nursing was easy. Some come from a family of nurses” (Andersen, Molly. 2013). Not only is this one of the main reasons, behind why students go into nursing, from the literature but I have heard it several times from fellow nursing students. Whether it is heating up a heating bag for someone with a minor ache or disinfecting a cut and finishing it off with some polysporin and a bandage. I like to try my very best to help people within the knowledge I have within reason. Recently a situation occurred at my house where the altruistic mindset just naturally came in. My dog has developed arthritis and was unable to get up on his bed. My sister, who is in nursing school as well, and I immediately rushed over to him and performed a lift. Growing up as a child, I had many struggles. From being raised by an aunt whom I did not always get along with, to not knowing my parents, and hating school, it is easy to say that my childhood was not the best. However, I always knew that I wanted to help people; to make a difference in people's lives. That led me to the decision to become a Registered Nurse, otherwise known as an RN. The procedures completed by Registered Nurses can be lifesaving. Before entering the nursing field, one should examine the salary and benefits of, educational requirements, the job description, as well as character requirements.
Nursing Nursing is a profession within the health care field. Nursing mainly focuses on personal, family as well as community care in ensuring they maintain and recover their health (Aiken et al., 647). Nurses can be distinguished from other providers of health care by their training, practice, and the approach towards patient care. Nursing involves the diversity of practice with practice scopes and prescriber authority levels. Traditionally, nurses provided health care under the supervision of physicians, but currently nurses are being observed as care providers.
There are countless people who aspire to help people in their lives. However, if you think about it, nearly every career helps others in some way, shape, or form. Teachers, scientists, policemen and various other careers aid people in different ways. I, like many others, have always known that I’ve wanted to help people. Yet, I also want to do more than that. I want to help others, but also save others- emotionally or physically, mentor others, inspire others, and be there for others during their most vulnerable times. This is who I am- and I have always been this person. In first grade, I ran a lemonade stand at my school for the Make-A-Wish Foundation; I got my third grade class to raise money for starving children; and I put up with bullying throughout middle school because I befriended a girl who had trouble making friends on her own. The quality of pure selflessness and care for others that I have always possessed would allow me to do something great with my life- it just took me some time to figure out what.
When people are asked why they want to become a nurse, they usually respond with an answer similar to, “It is just something I have always wanted to do”. However, for me, this was not the case. When reflecting on why I aspire to become a nurse, my answer resides in the rapidly growing job safety that the nursing career has to offer and the opportunity for specialization within this vast occupation. The leading factor that pulled me into nursing was the excessive amount of awaiting opportunities and advancements that are to be had once you obtain a baccalaureate degree in nursing.

Of interest in this paper is why people choose to study nursing at university or college. From students just graduating high school to mature students who have prior degrees or education, nursing is a popular choice as a path to study at university or college. Much of the literature focuses on females in the role of nurses. There was seldom a mention of male and female students choosing to become nurses.
I have always had a passion for nursing. As a child, I watched my mother getting up early, putting her scrubs on and headed out the door for a 12 hour shift. She was always content, and at ease to go for a long shift and even overtime at times. I love the fact that after work, she would always come home, satisfied with the day no matter how hard it was for her. She would sit and tell my brothers and sisters how she enjoyed the conversations that she had with her patients and what impact she had on their lives that day. Listening to these stories as a child, I knew that I wanted to become a nurse and listening to the same stories and helping people, making their day feel better. I wanted to follow my mom’s footsteps. At the end of a long shift, it is a rewarding profession, knowing that I am saving people’s lives, making them comfortable when they are near of dying, advocate and teaching them. As nurses, we care for patients through illness, injury, aging, health. We also promote health, prevent diseases and teaching the community; that’s what I love about nursing. I chose nursing as my profession because nursing is my ideal profession. In nursing, I can provide others with the care and the knowledge they need to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I can also give others the love and attention they need to be proud of the life they live. I think that society is very vulnerable and I want to make great contributions to the world of nursing. I don’t just want to be a nurse. I want to be a great nurse who is looked up to because of my experience, knowledge, and competence as a healthcare professional.
Additionally, friends and family have always encouraged me to study nursing. Throughout my life, people have commented on my caring nature and suggested nursing would be a perfect career for me. I agree, as I enjoy caring for others, whether they are a friend or a stranger. Therefore, nursing for individuals would bring joy to me. A final factor that influenced my decision is the understanding I will gain of the anatomy and physiology of the human body.
In my post secondary studies, many people are interested in what I want to do after I graduate and where I want to go in life. It is far rarer to have people ask the question of why. Why do I want to pursue a career in the medical field? Why do I want to spend my life helping people? Why do I want to attend the nursing program at Clarkson? My answer to the big question of why is not a simple one-faceted answer. I want to be a nurse for a myriad of reasons. In this reflection, I will touch on my long-lasting love for a career in medicine, my experience in school that solidified my desire to become a nurse, and the path that led me to apply to Clarkson College.
Even though nursing is a difficult and demanding profession, it can be very rewarding and exciting. To become a nurse, one must have a degree in nursing, have taken the NCLEX, and be a friendly compassionate person. Most tasks a nurse does are care planning, administering medication, and documentation. Becoming a nurse has many benefits including impacting lives, job security, and a stable income. A person aspiring to become a nurse should consider the different requirements for the career, the typical tasks of the career, and the possible benefits of the career.
Nursing is a promising career that offers many rewards to caring individuals. It is more than just a job that one attends day to day. Nursing is a career that kind people get in to because they are passionate about life and everything is has to offer. They care for people they have never met before in such a way that makes the patient feel comfortable and able to relax. In a way that makes it possible for the patient to recover from whatever they have encountered. If I am going to spend valuable time and money on education, I want to a job that I absolutely love. I want to have the satisfaction of knowing that my job is safe even when times are rough. Being a professional nurse opens your world up to meeting many different people, all from different cultures and backgrounds. Every day people you would never have met, if not for this career will enter your professional life, and I will get to do my part and make a difference in their lives. Bringing me to my second reason; I don’t think there is anything greater than being able to change and better the lives of the people around me. I want to become a nurse because I will have the ability to continually empower my patients and help them to achieve their goals, during their most vulnerable moments in life. This aspect of taking on the role of being a servant to my patients and to my patient’s family, is what I find extremely rewarding. The career i chose is a branch of the medical field. I chose a career in nursing, more specifically the career path of a registered nurse. This career consists of providing care for people of all ages and helping them with managing their conditions. I chose this career because my mother is an rn and my family has a strong presence in the medical field. It is important to understand the education or training requirements, skills, or talents needed, salary, benefits offered, and the duties for a particular career when making this decision.
My reasons for selecting a career in nursing stem directly from my desire to help our prospering population and community. This career appeals to me because it embodies what I strive to become, a person of influence, a guide, a respected adult, a mentor, and a person that can be trusted and looked up to with great passion. Working with the elderly community at this personal care home has enriched my life in many ways, including one for my passion of learning more about the nursing field.
