My Nursing Career

When people are asked why they want to become a nurse, they usually respond with an answer similar to, “It is just something I have always wanted to do”. However for myself, this was not the case. When reflecting on why I aspire to become a nurse, my answer resides in the rapidly growing job safety that the nursing career has to offer and the opportunity for specialization within this vast occupation. The leading factor that pulled me into nursing was the excessive amount of awaiting opportunities and advancements that are to be had once you obtain a baccalaureate degree in nursing.
When making the decision for your career path, it is crucial to choose a course of study that ignites your interests and passion. The potential for advancement within the nursing career is definitely a positive aspect because it allows for the ability to grow within the field. Nursing is never stagnant and it always provides the chance for you to further enhance your knowledge. Qualities, opportunities, and goals are a necessity for me when making decisions because it allows me to work towards something and accomplish it. In his book, 7 Summits, Hickey (2009) states, “Goals are the dreams that drive us to succeed and to seek our highest pursuits” (p.64). I personally work exceedingly well when I begin with the ending goal in mind because this causes me to notice my own advancement. When one is able to realize their own progress regarding something they are passionate about, it typically provides motivation and excels the drive for further improvement.

While there are many career settings in the military, schools, sports teams, and general family practice, I definitely see myself working in a hospital scene on the emergency room floor. In about five years, I see myself having recently achieved my short-term goal by obtaining my baccalaureate degree in nursing and continuing on to the master’s level. I look forward to applying myself and to continue enhancing my knowledge for my long-term goal of specializing in trauma as a nurse practitioner. Although the future is unpredictable and I am not sure where the course of this career will take me, I would like to see myself working in a hospital in the West Coast, preferably somewhere in California.
