Personal Statement Essay: My Passion For Biology

I agree with Albert Einstein when he said: “Teaching should be such that what is offered is perceived as a valuable gift and not as a hard duty.” The most influential teachers I recall made learning fascinating and I would like to instill this upon my future students. My passion for biology originated while working for a veterinary hospital at age fourteen. Therefore, I intend to pursue Secondary Biology certification as I posses many attributes required of a teacher and have always had high aspirations of becoming one.
During the course of my academic career at West Chester University, I struggled to overcome the aftermath of a terrible car accident. Consequently, I had three surgeries due to thoracic outlet syndrome and extensive nerve damage. Attempting to increase my GPA, I repeated courses that I failed to succeed in and took additional biology electives. Unfortunately, of all things, I then contracted spinal meningitis. This was during my last year, which compromised my GPA even further. While I have lost opportunities along the way, “the beautiful thing about learning is no one can take it away from you” (B.B. King). Persevering during times of hardship will enable me to provide students with the skills necessary to overcome challenges and/or obstacles.

Before the surgeries, I had high aspirations of becoming a university instructor and/or a molecular biologist. A more practical career goal is obtaining Secondary Biology certification. In ten years, I envision myself teaching high school biology and working towards a masters in education. I appreciate the life-changing opportunity Drexel can provide by admittance into the Secondary Biology certification
