Discrimination is defined as the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of race or sex. This treatment is prevalent in areas such as media, sports, and especially the work place. Most women make less than men and have smaller wages; this is largely due to discrimination.
Women, on average, make less than men in every state in the United States (Coukos), and there are many factors that influence how large the gap is. For example, the average woman earns 77 cents for every dollar a man makes; however single women earn 57 cents per married man’s dollar, and women of color make far less than white males earning almost 22% less than their male counterpart (Cooper). Because it is illegal, people argue that it will never happen. By this logic, people never steal because it is against the law, but this isn’t true. People still commit crimes and companies still pay women less because of their gender. Some ask why women don’t do anything if they know they are getting paid less. There are several answers to this question, one being that some simply do not know they are getting a smaller paycheck. Some companies refuse to discuss wages with their female employees, and some are even threatened like Lilly Ledbetter, a woman with firsthand experience of payment discrimination, who “was told [she would] be fired if [she] shared salary information at work,” (Ledbetter). Although women are allowed to sue their company if they know they are not being fairly paid, only 12% of those that sue their employer win their case (Cooper). Women are being denied an attempt at fair treatment and those who do not win their case are then put in danger of being demoted or even fired. These situations are what prolong the wage gap between men and women of the same occupation. Furthermore, it is believed that women suing their employers “would create a disincentive for firms to hire women” (Perry). The system is set up for women to make less money and many cannot do anything about it. They cannot discuss their wages, gain information on other salaries, or even sue their employer without fearing the loss of their job, yet people still continue to believe there are only logical reasons for unequal
