Here at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB) our goal is to provide excellent care to every patient and family member that enters our facility. Our nationally ranked team of healthcare workers strive daily to improve quality of life to each client we serve. Although there are a number of healthcare workers here at UAB, the nurses here work day and night to ensure that every patient’s needs are met. Furthermore, many of UAB’s nursing staff go out of their way every day in order to satisfy the needs of their clients. Being in the military I have came across a number of different leadership/management styles and tried to adopt some of those that I thought were effective. The values that we hold in the military are expected to be at a higher standard then our civilian counterpart. This is something that I do not take for granted and try to live by our core values. The core values in the Air Force are what guide our organization and something that I have tried to represent my whole Air Force career. “In May 1995, then-Secretary of the Air Force Sheila Widnall, and then-Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Gen. Ronald Fogleman, established the Air Force Core Values: Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do.” If you as a manager can abide by these values while supervising your people, no matter how many that would be, then morally you can feel like you did your best as a manager.

In most aspects of life the saying “less is always more” may ring true; however when it comes to providing quality care to patients, less only creates problems which can lead to a decrease in patient’s quality of life as well as nurse’s satisfaction with their jobs. The massive shortage of nurses throughout the United States has gotten attention from some of the most prestigious schools, news media and political leaders. Nurses are being burnt out from their jobs, they are being overworked and overlooked. New nurses are not being properly trained, and old nurses are on their way to retirement. All the while the rate of patient admissions is on the rise. Nurses are reporting lower satisfaction in their job positions and hospital retention rates are at an all-time low, conversely this is affecting all patients’ quality of care. The American Nurses Association (ANA) developed a foundation for which all nurses are expected to perform their basic duties in order to meet the needs of the society we serve. When skills are applied, students demonstrate their knowledge and ability to function in our current world. I value citizenship and feel that education has a responsibility to model and nurture character qualities in our students. Educating students is raising them equipped with tools that will enable them to function as contributing participants in a productive society. My career of nursing is like the cyclical pattern of life, as time passes and situations are experienced, one is shaped into a certain individual/professional, ending up in places that never seemed to be part of life’s plan. Personally, the challenges and triumphs of providing patient centered care to help others live a healthier life, and aiming to prevent illness, is rewarding and quite humbling. As I continue to learn about opportunities to provide individualized care to patients and their families, I further understand the imperativeness of the “whole person,” which is a critical skill of a nurse practitioner. As a skilled clinician, progressing in my career as an aspiring family nurse practitioner in the Stony Brook University School of Nursing, I will impact my patients by providing them comprehensive care that will result in improved quality of life.
