There are many reasons as to why I decided to pursue a degree in social work. One major reason is that I 'm interested in helping individuals and making changes. Another reason is I became more educated about the social work profession. After learning what a social worker was and what they do, I felt that this was the right profession for me. In addition, another reason is I believe as a social work, I can become more competent about individuals, society, social injustice and how to help individuals who are vulnerable.
The human services position I chose to research was a Social Worker. I choose it because I’m in school specifically to earn that degree. Social workers can take on many roles including helping individuals, groups and community’s. They are a bridge to connect people with community resources they may benefit from. They are advocates and help keep people out of harm’s way.
Empowerment can be defined as a technique employed by social workers to allow individuals to help themselves and regain social functioning. It helps them understand themselves as a person as well as give them the freedom to make decisions for them to become self-actualized. The social worker who is empowerment-focused aims to bring about social justice. Advocacy can be defined as the role given to a social worker who aims to bring awareness and interest to institutions about the needs of client/s. Since most times these institutions make it difficult for clients to access help, the social worker aims to bring about change in these institutions by sharing what the client’s needs and requests are, challenging the institution’s decision to not provide services and pushing for their adjustment of their policies overall.
I have a very personable personality, and I want to help people, no matter the circumstance. I chose social work because the profession provides the resources and fundamental practices to help the people function in society by adapting to the challenges of life. I am interested in the profession of social work because this profession offers so much hope to the world. This profession is design to endorse healthy living for the individual, the family, and the community. I chose social work because it relates to many of the factors identified previously, such as my personal values and norms as an individual.
This self-reflection will explore the choices and inspiration as to why I want to be a social worker in the area of community development/international social work. Social work is an important area and industry to understand and explore more because it focuses on helping many different communities, individuals and marginalizes/disadvantaged people in today’s society. According to (Chenoweth and McAuliffe) social work draws on key values including social justice and human rights. According to the AASW they say The social work profession facilitates social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people. Principles of social justice, human rights, collective responsibility and respect for diversities are central to social work.
Social Workers also approach the clients to not only resolve personal conflicts but to allow the client to function best within their environments. Social Work distinguishing characteristics include the emphasis on the person-in-environment model as well as its emphasis on social justice. Compared to other similar professions, Social Work has differing professional values and ethics that include appreciation to human diversity, understanding of social welfare policy and services, emphasis on both social and economic justice, as well as a strong foundation in education. The importance of Social Work includes numerous of explanations. Social Workers help countless of people navigate through major life challenges or setbacks to find hope as well as options to achieve greater things.
According to the NASW Code of Ethics, “Social workers should have a knowledge base of their clients ' cultures and be able to demonstrate competence in the provision of services that are sensitive to clients ' cultures and to differences among people and cultural groups” (***). Basically, what this is stating is that social workers need to understand their client’s culture and be able to serve them in a way that is appropriate to their diversity. A social worker can also learn a lot about diversity through a system perspective framework. In the text, they discuss a social workers mission and say that it is to help enhance opportunities for all people. With a systems perspective framework, you get the opportunity to reach out and learn about many different cultures and communities because you are trying to help your client.
Social Work is a profession that is committed to the promotion, restoration, maintenance, and enhancement of social functioning. Its focus is to work with individuals, groups, and communities, in helping them use the resources within themselves and the environment to cope more effectively with their problems. At its most basic level, social work is about promoting the general welfare of society by representing those who are most vulnerable. Providing social services can sometimes be a difficult task, wrought with ethical uncertainties and challenges. The Social Work Code of Ethics helps social workers navigate these challenges throughout their careers and provide a framework for the principles and standards a social worker must uphold.
