Although dance is an art form that as a viewer or audience member is viewed as graceful and flawless, there are many risk that are involved with being a dancer. When people imagine a dance performance, they envision a stage with bright lights, loud music, and colorful costumes. What they do not think about is the joy or thrill that the dancer gets along with preforming in front of a large audience. The idea of having to sit out on that adrenaline rush because of a broken foot or a twisted ankle is every dancers’ nightmare. Dance is a sport or activity in which the body of a performer is constantly put into various motion. This creates a high risk for the dancer’s body. There's many reasons a dancer can become injured along with many different types of injuries. The most common reason that a dancer may become injured is because of how often dancers are constantly using their joints and muscles. “Typical dance injuries involve overuse” (Sheeden). Dancers live a life full of practice, training, rehearsal, and preforming. Professional dancers can spend anywhere from 12-20 hours a week dancing. There are few dancers (especially professionals) that get about 1-2 days of a break from dancing, if the receive any at all. All of these hours spent overusing and overworking these muscles leave a dancer with a high risk of hurting themselves. Another reason that a dancer can put themselves at risk is because of the viewpoint dancers are taught at. When preforming in front of an audience, they are taught that no form of weakness is supposed to show. There are times when a dancing is tired, needs a break of is starting to feel soreness or pain in a certain area, but many dancers know that this "weakness" can not be shown and chose to ignore this. Choosing to ignore something of one of these problems is just going to leave a dancer in danger of
