Each and every sense is very important to our day to day life. From hearing to touch, dancers rely on many senses to help carry them through their performance. As a dancer myself, I believe touch, vision, and hearing are some senses that dancers rely on the most. I couldn’t not imagine going through everyday life without all five of my senses, so thinking of a performer on a stage without even one is eye-opening. Dancers greatly rely on the the sense of touch when dancing. Our sense of touch is controlled by webs of nerve endings and touch receptors within our skin. This is known as the somatosensory system, which is responsible for all sensations that we feel including pain, warmth, cold, pressure, and more. If a dancer is injured, they will become aware through their nociceptors, which are receptors at the end of a sensory neuron axon that are activated by stimuli that cause tissue damage (Nida Gleveckas-Martens, 2013). Dancers also often perform with other dancers. In these cases, the dancer will need his or her sense of touch to feel the pressure of their co-dancer’s bodies against theirs when dancing together. There also may be stage props on the set that the dance will need to touch and interact with, and without touch the dancer would have great difficulty interacting or even the inability with the given props. Dancers also deeply rely on their eyes and vision in many ways while performing. “Nearly 70% of the sensory receptors in a humans whole body is in their eyes and nearly half of the cerebral cortex is involved in vision” (CrashCourse, 2015).
