The Importance Of College Experience

It’s a Monday morning. I have awakened to my annoying alarm clock telling me it’s time to get up and start another work week. Quietly I mutter and complain as I walk to the bathroom to start getting ready for work. Looking into the mirror I think to myself, “I hate having to get up and go to a job that I do not like. I wish I could do something else.” Well, there is something else. I can go back to school and create a new and more solid path. “Where do I go? How do I get started? How much will this cost?” are just a few of the questions running through my head. A friend of mine told me to go by Lone Star College and speak to one of the advisors. He described his experience and how it had motivated him to start, transfer, and finish school. Richard J. Light of Harvard University said, “Good advising may be the single most underestimated characteristic of a successful college experience.” I will show the need of advisors in the college system by evaluating who they are and how they help the students succeed with their goals and help create a path to success. I can’t help to feel excited, yet scared from my life changing decision to start college. I think to myself, “Access to good advising is great, but what makes these people any different from a parent or friend giving college advice?” Education and experience is your answer. An advisor requires at least 2 years of experience in higher education learning and a bachelor’s degree. A counselor requires a master’s degree that is trained to provide personal, academic, and career counseling services. As you can see the individuals advising the students have a high level of education and experience and are qualified.
