The Future Car
To this day I still remember the first time I saw an electric car. I remember coming home to my mother and telling her that I saw a car that runs on no gas. My mom, being the classic uneducated woman looks at me and said “what movie did you get that from”, I laughed as I searched it on my phone, and showed her the different models of electric cars. Soon after my mother was telling everybody how she would love to have the new sleek, trendy modern electric car “The Tesla”. Ever since the day I laid my eyes on that car, I sincerely found my fascination with electric cars.

E.B. White wrote in “Fro-Joy”, “everything in life is somewhere else, and you get there in a car”, which could not be any truer (White). The first minute and nineteen seconds of the film, Who Killed the Electric Car, reported that “two million new cars are sold in California each year” (Who). As a society, the means of transportation is everything. Buses and trains can be unreliable the only sure way of transporting yourself to point A to point B is with a car. In the United States the automobile addiction is rising, it is recorded that the “national average of 2.28 vehicles per household” (Study). Inflating gas prices, deepening complexity in the Middle East, and aggressive rate of global warming is threatening the lives of generations to come, immediate action must be taken. In this analysis the EV1 will be deconstructed from the beginning of the amazing invention to the crushing end made by the car companies, oil companies, and the California Air and Resource Board. Also, the options that are available today for a cleaner, greener way of transportation will be noted. In addition the correlation between the information supported in the film and today’s politics will be explained, along with the problems we are still facing today with alternative transportation.
In the future the global car market is full of potential. There are currently 44 million vehicles and by the year 2002 experts estimate that number will grow to 64 million. That growth is not expected to be in the US, rather in countries such as: China, India, The Pacific Rim, South Africa, and South America. In America, a current trend is for the neighborhood car dealer to be purchased by a large manufacturer, such as GM, so cars can be sold through retail outlets. In the early years, England and France were the first nations to experiment with electric vehicles with the United States showing some interest in about 1895. The general perception of the electric vehicle was that it had many advantages over gasoline powered cars. It was clean, silent, free from vibrations, thoroughly reliable, easy to start and control, and produced no dirt or odor. The disadvantages were short range and high initial cost. It was not as cheap to run as other forms of transportation and could average only about 18 miles per day, but this met the needs of much of the population in the larger cities. The problem of this study was to research the development and impacts of the electric vehicle. At the turn of the 19th Century when automobiles were new, electric vehicles outnumbered gasoline-powered vehicles. The problem for the electric car was that electric battery technology did not improve nearly as fast as gasoline technology and by 1910 the interest in the development of the electric vehicle had all but ceased (Sedgwick 1996). Electric vehicles made a surge back onto the national scene because of the oil crisis of the late seventies and the early eighties, but nterest soon dropped however, because the crisis was soon solved. Today the current surge of interest in electric vehicles replacing the internal combustion engine, or ICE, is due strictly to one concern, air quality. The world’s population is booming and cars are polluting the world’s cities, dumping large amounts of carbon dioxide and other climate-altering greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, and consuming vast quantities of petroleum (Sperling 1995). Now is the time for the solution, the electric car.
These days technology keeps evolving. The electric car is yet another new way to help the environment. The electric car uses electricity instead of gasoline. In 1831, Michael Faraday came up with the theory for generating electricity. In 1838, Robert Anderson created the motorcycle. The first electric vehicle was made in 1839 but it wasn’t commercialised. Finally in 1873, Robert Davidson succeeded in making a practical electric car. At that time, changing gears was the most difficult aspect of driving gasoline cars, but with the electric car this was no longer necessary. The History and Advantages of Electric Cars
Early electric vehicles may have appeared as early as 1830. Scottish inventor Robert Davidson constructed the world's first prototype electric vehicle in 1837, but historians generally credit J.K. Starley, an English inventor, and Fred M. Kimball of Boston with building the first practical electric cars in 1888. Later in the in the decade, William Morrison of Des Moines, Iowa, constructed his version of the electric vehicle in 1891. His vehicle required 24 storage battery cells, took 10 hours to charge, and could run for 13 hours. It could carry up to 12 people and had a 4-horsepower motor.
...rther then the end of 2010, the introduction of the electric car is not far to come. With proper government regulations and consumer knowledge, adoptability of the electric car is possible. However, one can drastically differ in opinion as to why the required elements to support such a vehicle were not readily planned to facilitate such a change. The inadequacies draw wavering concerns for both consumers and business looking for the return of value and profit. The larger picture needs to be remembered in which oil is not a renewable resource and results in pollution and environmental hazard. Consumers and business must work together to overcome the roadblocks down the road and support each other in the introduction of and future of the electric car. Adjustments will have to be made on both sides to ensure success and minimize the society and economy disruptions.
The world of technology is ever changing and advancing. With the automotive industry in play technology is constantly surpassing what is available today with what can be done for tomorrow. Technology and the automotive industry go hand in hand with constant improvement to components of cars. Due to technology advancement there is competition within the car industry, especially between American car companies and European car companies. European car companies provide their buyers with innovative variety and revolutionary luxuries. European car technology is superior to American car technology due to their safety, entertainment, and luxury features.
