Sukhman Sandhu, or Suk (as people call her), an operating nurse, who in the OR (Operating Room) is a person that takes care of patients and gives support to the patient’s family. In the OR she also takes her job so seriously that if another person doesn’t do their job well, she will not be afraid to call them out. Yet, when you meet her in person you will be very comfortable talking to her and she will do anything to help anyone. She is very proud of what she has become today as a nurse. Her whole decision about becoming a nurse was not made by her, but decided by her parents. She decided to go to the University of British Columbia Okanagan, in Canada (UBC). She went to UBC because it was one of the closest schools to her home and also it had a very good nursing program. One change that she had to go through when she went to university was that she wasn’t used to being away from home because all the other school she had been to were close to home. To take her mind off things like being away from home when she was in the nursing program she told me “ I liked to read, so when I thought about being away from home I went to the university library and read book and studied there.” The nursing program had a lot of work “ the work load in the beginning of nursing school was very intense” which she expected and was prepared for, so she didn’t really worry about not being able to finish the work. Another thing that supported her decision about nursing was one day in her nursing program, “it was in second year in my nursing degree and when we learned to do injections and IV’s.” What was a big deal were the decisions she had to make on her own. Nurses that want to be specialized in a certain area have to further your education after the nursing program so when they find a job they can can focus on one certain area of the body. When she was in university, and when other nurses are in the nursing program they become registered nurses then they have to choose which fields they want to go in, such as the ICU, ER, OR, and etc. When she finished the nursing program, she needed to decide where she wanted to go. She decided to go to the OR and she knew she wanted to go to the OR because also in her second year of her nursing program , “they arranged us for and Operating room visit and I was fascinated by surgery since that day. I knew I wanted to be in the OR, because of that I started to take operating courses in college.” When she was taking the OR nursing courses outside of university, she realised how serious decisions are, because if a person make a wrong decision, it can affect someone in the future by affecting their health. When someone wants to be a nurse, they go through the nursing program and become a nurse at the end of the program. For as long as she could remember, Sara had was set on being a teacher. Following those childhood aspirations, she went into college to become a teacher. Unfortunately, Sara had to acknowledge the fact that a teacher’s salary may not support her and her big plans. Growing up just south of Detroit meant that Sara was able to see all of the struggles that would be difficult to overcome. A teacher just would not cut it. So, Sara buckled down and signed up for a nursing program. Sara has since completed the required education but plans on furthering her knowledge. Currently, the young nurse is pursuing certification in wound care. Some days, Sara thinks of going after the occupation of a nurse practitioner or CRNA. “I don’t think that I will,” Sara mentioned with a sigh, “Maybe after Clayton graduates. As a nurse seeking my bachelor in nursing I have a lot of mentors in my career path. The person I choose to interview is my mentor name, Karen. In the process of her nursing career, she was influenced by her mentor to continue her education, in women's health because of her passion for young teens. Karen started her career in nursing at Grand Valley State University where she earned a Bachelor Degree in nursing. After having her BSN for many years, Karen decision to continue her education at Michigan State University where she received a Master degree in Nursing.
Nursing came in a round-about way for me. I had little direction when I graduated high school and had already disregarded the nursing field due to an incident with a family member (who was a nurse) that had left a negative impression about the nursing field on me. I entered college planning on a pre-med or biology major. I had built up a vision of college being different- scholarly, intellectual, advanced- different somehow than school before. I soon was disillusioned. My first biology course was a bitter disappointment and I turned away from any thoughts of a medical/health related career altogether.
For this assignment I had the pleasure sitting down with Emily Petermeier and getting an insight on what the real nursing world is like. Emily graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing in May 2015, and got a job at Fairview East Bank Hospital. This interview really helped me understand what it is like to be a new nurse and the dedication that I have to have going through nursing school and throughout my career. When I began this journey I knew that Nursing was all I wanted to do and in order to succeed and do well in nursing school, it was going to require a ton of devotion and sacrifice. Nursing school did not come without its challenges, not only did we have to deal with going to class, clinicals, studying for exams, but we also had to add in the factors of jobs, family, marriages, children, sickness and our daily life. But our instructors encouraged us and pushed us to keep going, and for that we are grateful because we all made a decision to stick with it, and here we are today. It seems unimaginable that just a year ago this journey was just beginning, but here we are today a year later,
Nursing is not just a career it’s a very board profession. In nursing there are many job opportunities. There are different types of nursing jobs that a person can do depending on the specialty that he/she feel comfortable with. Patients come to the hospital for help and they are trusting us to help them feel better and heal them. In healthcare things changes every day so it’s our job to find out what’s different from today and tomorrow to give our patients the best treatment possible. Nursing is more than just passing out medications. We come in the field because we are very compassionate and want to heal the sick. Nursing is more than just the ears and eyes for the physician. While in the care of the nurses they make sure their patients are well taken care of and if something is wrong they know how to fix it without calling a doctor.
Of interest in this paper is why people choose to study nursing at university or college. From students just graduating high school to mature students who have prior degrees or education, nursing is a popular choice as a path to study at university or college. Much of the literature focuses on females in the role of nurses. There was seldom a mention of male and female students choosing to become nurses.
Nursing had not initially been a career option for me, but nursing had made an impact on my life, even at an early age. There was a picture frame that sat on my mother’s dresser with an image of her in her student nurse uniform. It was very formal, and she wore a blue cape with red satin lining. This image gave me my first impression of nursing. Helping my mother with the laundry, bleaching the white uniforms and starching the stiff white cap banded with a thin black velvet ribbon was another activity I associated with nursing. In 1979, my mother was sent to Hershey Medical Center for training to become the first certified Enterostomal Therapist in the state of Virginia. Adult Nursing is a very rewarding career which provides endless opportunities. I would describe myself as a caring and compassionate person. I believe I possess these qualities naturally. I am compelled to put other people’s needs before my own. I can contribute my personal qualities to this course of being dedicated and determined into committing myself to this 3 year course and excelling academically. At the age of 36, mom decided to return to college to obtain her nursing degree. This wasn’t a hard decision for her to make. In April before she enrolled in school, my great grandmother passed away. This major dilemma played a major role in mom’s return to school.
