Sukhman Sandhu, or Suk (as people call her), an operating nurse, who in the OR (Operating Room) is a person that takes care of patients and gives support to the patient’s family. In the OR she also takes her job so seriously that if another person doesn’t do their job well, she will not be afraid to call them out. Yet, when you meet her in person you will be very comfortable talking to her and she will do anything to help anyone. She is very proud of what she has become today as a nurse. Her whole decision about becoming a nurse was not made by her, but decided by her parents. At first she wanted to be a teacher, but her parents wanted her to be a nurse, and she decided to listen to her parents. Now when she looks back at that moment she says, …show more content…

She decided to go to the University of British Columbia Okanagan, in Canada (UBC). She went to UBC because it was one of the closest schools to her home and also it had a very good nursing program. One change that she had to go through when she went to university was that she wasn’t used to being away from home because all the other school she had been to were close to home. To take her mind off things like being away from home when she was in the nursing program she told me “ I liked to read, so when I thought about being away from home I went to the university library and read book and studied there.” The nursing program had a lot of work “ the work load in the beginning of nursing school was very intense” which she expected and was prepared for, so she didn’t really worry about not being able to finish the work. Another thing that supported her decision about nursing was one day in her nursing program, “it was in second year in my nursing degree and when we learned to do injections and IV’s.” What was a big deal were the decisions she had to make on her own. Nurses that want to be specialized in a certain area have to further your education after the nursing program so when they find a job they can can focus on one certain area of the body. When she was in university, and when other nurses are in the nursing program they become registered nurses then they have to choose which fields they want to go in, such as the ICU, ER, OR, and etc. When she finished the nursing program, she needed to decide where she wanted to go. She decided to go to the OR and she knew she wanted to go to the OR because also in her second year of her nursing program , “they arranged us for and Operating room visit and I was fascinated by surgery since that day. I knew I wanted to be in the OR, because of that I started to take operating courses in college.” When she was taking the OR nursing courses outside of university, she realised how serious decisions are, because if a person make a wrong decision, it can affect someone in the future by affecting their health. When someone wants to be a nurse, they go through the nursing program and become a nurse at the end of the program. After they go into the nursing field outside of school, there are also other courses for nurses to become higher position
