For the sake of privacy let's call her Maggie. Imagine not getting into college because of your social media account, an easy thing to prevent. This happened to Maggie who was getting into Bowdoin College in Brunswick. She didn't realize colleges look at your social media account until she tweeted harmful comments and could no longer attend the college (Singer). This is just one scenario of the 12% who get rejected every year because of their social media. Don't be that person, and the number one rule is if you don't want your parents to see it don't post it. Social media prevents you from getting into college, especially when you post bad things. The article “How Social Media Can Affect College Admissions states” “The Kaplan study also reported that 12% of college admission applicants we rejected were because of what they saw on social media” (2014). This shows that even though 12% might not seem like a lot it should be 0%, considering it is a very easy thing to prevent. Also, you can be so booksmart and still not get into your dream college because of your account. This is important because you have to use social media wisely. Therefore, all social media pages should only be clean information.
Next, jobs are denied and people are fired for harmful comments and inappropriate pictures. People don’t realize their boss or coworkers might see their post. This is important because it shows what not to do on your profile. People get fired all the time for not following these simple rules. When your post goes away on your end, it’s still there to access for hackers, servers, and a few others. This article “Here’s What Really Happens When You ‘Delete’ Something On The Internet”, states “Twitter doesn’t comment on what it does when you delete a tweet, but says that ‘search engines and other third parties may still retain copies of your public information’” (2015). This shows that you never delete anything considering people can still retain everything you ‘deleted’. This is important because it shows never to post anything wrong because people will still see it after you ‘delete it’. Therefore, never post anything bad or it will come back to haunt you. In conclusion, posting inappropriate comments on one’s social media accounts can have detrimental impacts. This may mean being rejected from your dream college, since admissions officers are known to check social media accounts. Or, this may mean not being hired by an employer, or even being fired from a job, since employers are also known to monitor social media accounts.
