There has been controversy as to whether parents should limit the use of social media by teenagers. Teenagers feel that there is no need to limit the use of their social media networking, but on the other hand parents should feel the need to limit their use and also keep track of their teen’s social networking. Social media has allowed to be connected with their peers, teens who post positive status are more likely to be involved in extracurricular activities, and to many teens putting up “selfies” is a self confidence boost; however, too much social media can affect students GPA in school, cyber bulling can affect social health. Social media networks can give out personal information. Social media sites such as Facebook are one of the most popular social media sites that has 700,000-750,000 members joining each day. Connecting with peers shouldn’t be a problem. It’s as easy typing the peers name push search, and some suggestions come up and find your peer you’re looking for and shoot them a message instantly with social media manly targeting young people such as teenagers. Facebook has made it so easy for teens to interact and engage with their peers. It allows teens to come into contact with long, lost relatives and reunite with them. Facebook is a virtual site = which gives teens an endless possibility to engage with peers, family, of maybe even people who they have never meet allowing then to interact making new friends. (“Every day life . global” #1) Teens who post positive status are more likely to be involved. Teens posting activities they are involved in such as clubs, sports, competitions, or FFA that are positive. Being involved in extracurricular activities can have a very positive impact with a teen’s grades and so... ... middle of paper ... ... much social media can affect teens GPA in school because many teens tend to be socializing in school and their grades begin to suffer. Also social media can affect social health; for example, it can lead to cyber bulling. Then that teen will not want to attend school because that teen living on constant fear of being bullied. Most dangerous of all, it can give away your identity. For theses reasons parents should limit their teens use no matter up set their teens might get. It will be more beneficial in the long run. There has always been controversy on whether or not social media is healthy for teenagers. In the article, “Antisocial Networking?” by Hilary Stout from the New York Times dated April 30, 2010, Stout explicates why she dislikes social networking sites. She claims that social media eliminates the opportunity for adolescents to develop empathy for others, understand different emotions, and recognize the meaning of facial expressions and body language. However, Melissa Healy clarifies how social media is beneficial for teens in her article, “Teenage Social Media Butterflies May Not Be Such a Bad Idea” from the Los Angeles Times dated May 18, 2010. I disagree with Hilary Stout because social media is an efficient way of communicating with friends, helps teens develop social skills, and creates opportunities for adolescents.
Social media gives minors the chance to express how they are feeling and confide with other people who have or had felt the same way. It can also help them to be more confident and feel accepted by family friends and their community. In return this makes them more sympathetic and open minded to new ideas and new people. This makes social media helpful for them and others.

Time is the most valuable aspect of a teenager’s life. The vast potential found in one’s youth can be fulfilled or not depending on how they use their time. Therefore, that in which parents allow their children to employ themselves in is crucial to their development. Social media is one of the most significant devices of influence in today’s society. Just how prevalent is social media use? 73% of teens are on or involved in social media. 60% of adults think parents should have full control over everything a child does online. The significance of these statistics is increasing because of how supremely influential social media is. Until recently, parental supervision has been the understood method of monitors children’s social media activity. However, the effectiveness of parental supervision is being questioned, and in some cases challenged by schools through the institution of new “educational monitoring systems” supposedly designed to ensure safety while sustaining the privacy of students. Since authority for the educating of children is given to schools by their parents, the authority of monitoring kids’ social media activity should find its genesis in the home as well.

The first reason why I see social media ruining the lives of teenagers is because students have been getting cyberbullied on a daily basis. When I was 11 years old, a group of girls created a group chat with me in it and started pointing out my every flaw. I was already going through one of the hardest times with my family, but none of those girls knew. Teenagers are clueless so other students lives. No one knows what each other is going through at home. Not to mention, they think that since it is on social media, they won’t get caught or in trouble. If social media/ texting was controlled more, this wouldn’t be such a huge issue.
