At present, whether social media is favorable or unfavorable, many students utilize these sites on a daily basis. Between Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and even LinkedIn, social media is undoubtedly an outlet that engages most online users. The Positive Effects of Tumblr on Teen Culture Teenagers use social media for many different reasons. They use it to feel deemed worthy by their peers, to post personal opinions, and to share their daily life. They spend more time with their phones, laptops, iPads, etc. than they do with their family, friends, boyfriends and girlfriends. Tumblr is a popular blogging website/app that has gained popularity in the last few years.
However, researchers have concluded that “[p]sychologist and educators are concerned about the potential negative effects of misuse or overuse of Facebook® and the related psychological, social and physical problems (Andreassen, Torsheim, Brunborg, & Pallesen, 2012)” (Uysal, Satici and Akin 1). Take a look around any college campus and within minutes you will notices students glued to their computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Although most students use technology devices to aid in their education, many are also engaging in activities on social networks. Are students connecting to Facebook and Twitter too much? Are social networks causing negative effects in students’ lives that can be unhealthy for them, affect their grades, and potentially cause them to lose their future jobs?

As of September 30, 2013, Facebook claims to have 1.19 billion monthly active users, making it the world’s largest social network (Newsroom). Facebook has become a new phenomenon of today’s society. While Facebook helps individuals to connect, it can also cause problems to users. Over the past few years since Facebook was founded in 2004, the number of Facebook users has grown rapidly. Even though Facebook has become increasingly popular among college students, Facebook has its advantages and disadvantages.
The results showed that 73% of wired teenagers now use social media websites. Of those seventy three percent of wired students 45% spend 4 to 6 hours, 20% spend 2 to 4 hours, 12% spend 0 to 2 hours, and 23% spend more than 8 hours on social media. “Results show tha... ... middle of paper ... ...uch time on social networks and on their phones but at the same time they are developing important knowledge and social skills.
