“12% of all college applications were rejected as a result of what colleges discovered on students’ posts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Youtube” (WWLP). That’s a staggering number. Over one in ten college applicants were rejected from a college they applied to because of a bad choice they made on Social Media. For some students, it may not even be something that they posted themselves. Colleges also look at things your friends post, especially if you’re tagged in the posts. Many colleges take the time to look at applicants’ social media posts even when they have over 50,000 applicants (Asimov). This shows the importance of making good choices online. An example shown in the video from WWLP was a student applying to Boden College, right here in Maine. She was sitting in a lecture being given to applicants that was giving them information about the school. The entire time she was sitting in the lecture, she was tweeting about how boring the school was, and school officials were watching the tweets in real time! As a result of the tweets, her application was denied. This shows just how destructive one mistake can become. Just one inappropriate post can cost you your education or even a job. You even have to be careful what your friends post, because that can reflect poorly on you as well. A study shows that 69% of all employers have rejected a candidate for a job because of something they’ve discovered on the applicants’ social media account(s) (AOL Finance). “Use your Facebook account as an online resumé. Put up photographs of projects you’re involved in, pictures of trips with a couple of lines about what you did and what you learned. Lots of pictures of family”
