After reflecting on my nursing situation of E.H., I realize that Anne Boykin and Savina Schoenhoffer’s Nursing as Caring theory is consistent with my practice behavior and approach.
Purpose
The theory of Nursing as Caring is concerned with caring being an unselfish act. It also focused on a lived shared experience between the one providing care and the ones being cared for, in other words, a nursing situation. It also evaluates the calls for nursing in a particulate situation. One particular call for nursing is emphasized through this theory, commitment. They note, “The nurse enters the nursing situation with intentional commitment of knowing, acknowledging, affirming and celebrating the person caring (Smith & Parker, 2015, p. 344).

As mentioned, “All knowledge of nursing is created and understood within the nursing situation” (Smith & Parker, 2015, p. 344). The theory is also grounded in caring and from this lived experience both the one providing care and the one receiving care grow with understanding and expression of caring. As I review my nursing situation of E.H., when I visited him in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU), I knew he was living caring through compassion as he appreciated the care I provided for him and I, commitment, in helping him on his journey to recovery.
Metaparadigm
The concept of this theory is grounded in the notion that all persons are capable of caring and is focused on the necessity to support persons through a lived experience in caring, while growing individually as caring persons. (Smith & Parker, 2015). When applied to the nursing situation of E.H., I recalled approaching him with options to make choices and I viewed his needs and opinions as a priority for his situation.
