Nursing has been around for a very extensive period of time, dating back to 250 B.C., when the first nursing school was established in India. Nursing can be characterized as the promotion and optimization of good health, prevention of injury or illness, relief of pain through diagnosis and treatment, and all around care of patients and their families. There are many different jobs and careers that involve nursing such as nursing assistants, registered nurses, and nurse practitioners. Nursing is open to both men and women, but the percentage of women compared to men in the field is almost ten to one. However, being a registered nurse takes skill and adaptability in order to give medical care and provide explanations to a patient. They may also be required to offer support and advice to both the patient or the patient’s parents. The daily responsibilities of a registered nurse include managing and keeping detailed records and reports of patients, provide patients with medicines and treatments, devise plans for the care of patients, record observations made about patients, analyse results of diagnostic tests, inform a patient and the patient’s family on how to carry out and keep up with treatments or therapy, and set up follow up appointments once treatments are completed. The ideal candidate for a registered nurse is one that contains a specific set of characteristics that they can translate into helping their patients. These characteristics include listening skills, service minded actions, critical thinking and problem solving abilities, exquisite speaking and writing skills, and fast and concise judgements when making decisions, especially in critical times under substantial amounts of stress and pressure. The work environment for a registered nurse includes a range of situations such as hospitals, community clinics, schools, military bases, physicians’ offices, home health care services, and nursing homes. Nurse practitioner is a title given to a person who has completed specialized diagnostic training and a graduate clinical. In most cases, a nurse practitioner can assume most of the same duties practiced by family doctors, and typically have the same qualifications as them as well. Most nurse practitioners are able to practice in their own clinic, without the supervision of a physician. The daily responsibilities of a registered nurse can vary from day to day, and can include several different undertakings such as the care of patients with specific or chronic medical conditions, apply learned skills to assist in positive health outcomes, the synthesization of new technologies or practices into preexisting practices, taking charge in leadership roles that may be advanced, complex, or stressful, conveying knowledge in the practice both on paper or in writing, and orally through communication with a patient, practicing care that is patient-centered which may include duties specific to certain patients, and construct an empathetic and collaborative relationship with patients in order to supply them with the necessary help they need. A nurse practitioner has the ability to specialize in a certain field they are more passionate about. I plan to pursue a career in nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner. This career take many steps to complete. But it is different routes you can take and different programs you can enroll in for this profession. Family Nurse Practitioners can prescribe medication and diagnose patients and give treatment. They can work either in hospitals and or clinics as a primary healthcare provider. They can also order specific x-rays and test that need to be done for a patient. The nurse practitioners interact with less patients in a clinic than in a hospital. Np’s have privileges to prescribe medications in every state.
“Behind every great nurse there is a running CNA.” This statement is true, however only in the long-term care setting of nursing homes. Certified Nursing Assistants/Aides can be found in different settings, as well. Such as, hospice environments, and the homes of those seeking home healthcare.
