What does everyone have in common despite having a different gender, race, or sexual preference? Humans share the right to be treated equal, yet some people are being denied this. In the industrial world, minorities struggle to put food on their tables, to provide education to their children, and to lead happy lives. The wage gap can be closed by understanding the causes, looking back on past efforts, and recognizing recent developments for the purpose. By doing these actions, societies will create an equal world of opportunities. First, the causes of the wage gap are debated by researchers, but the most prominent of them include discrimination, occupation, and choices. Gender gaps propose controversial topics for the wage differences and are fueled by sexism against women. For decades, women have been receiving pay that is lower than men’s earnings; employers give women about thirty-three percent less than what they pay men, creating a gap (Glenn). Age is another contribution to discrimination called ageism. Employers stereotype older workers as lazy, tired, and outdated which allows for them to easily overlook more experienced employees for the young. Consequently, these older adults are part of a growing minority in the U.S. Different occupations pose varying wages for genders considering that men and women apply for unique jobs. According to Elizabeth Rogers’ statistics, over forty-nine percent of the wage gap is because of occupation differences. Many say women and their choices are to blame for the gender wage gap by job and life choices. One gets to choose what work they want, and it just so happens that women choose less diverse fields to seek a job in than their counterparts.
