Today was my fourth visit at my clinical site. Due to upcoming requirements my CI and I started our morning by walking through my PTA student evaluation: clinical experience and clinical instruction packet she helped me identify a few sections at the clinic that was unsure about and reviewed over details that I provided in regards to her and my clinical site. Overall we had a goof mid-term discussion. We discussed where I am to date and areas we could look at for growth as SPTA over the next few weeks.
Again this week my CI provided me with the opportunity to demonstrate what I learned to current by allowing me to lead three patients through various therapeutic exercises. She basically informed me how much weight and resistance each patient
What went well during my clinical day was that this was the first time that I was treated very well by the nurse. This nurse was really good about sharing what she was passionate about, so this encouraged me to want to learn more about what she was teaching me. The best part of my day was patient and parent interaction. I went into two patient’s rooms and played games with them or colored with them. It brightened up my day seeing them laugh despite the health issues they had going on.

Caring for a pt with a chest tube and uncontrolled pain. I learned a lot that day. I have been reflecting on your tips about my head to toe assessment and I have decided I am going to change the order in which I do things. However if I would have been able to do the chest tube assessment on my own, I would have made it a priority assessment when I initially went into to the pt's room to do my safety check I would not have waited to assess it during my head toe, of course I would have reassessed. This is another reason it's so great that as students that we have the chance to work with so many different instructors as nobody has ever suggested that I could make changes to the way I do my assessment, so thank you! I think I was able to take a small leadership role in asking Harley to give my pt his 0800 meds when I was unable to leave the med room, and knowing that it was more important for the pt to get his Dilaudid, than for me to practice the skill; I asked Harley if he could give the med if my instructor wasn't back within ten minutes. In the past I have felt like if I can't do everything within my scope for my patients that means I'm not doing a good job, but I'm trying to be more mindful that it is okay to call on a team member for
A meaningful event from my clinical experience was during week four when my RA and I along with the nurse helped a client who had an unwitnessed fall. I came back to the unit after my break, and then it was my colleague’s turn to go for her break. We had to monitor each others clients during break time. Before she left, she told me that her client is in his room having breakfast and let her know about the client’s foods and drinks intake. He needs one-person assistance and he uses walker. She also told to assist the client to take off his pajamas and change into day clothes if he allows. I went along with another colleague to the client’s room, he was just sitting on the couch and he ate 25% of the foods and drank half cup of juice.
This semester has been long and daunting and with AP tests coming up, it will be a lot darker before the dawn of the upcoming semester. So in order to better prepare, I have decided to partake in mock AP tests at school and at home. Not only am I preparing to be successful on the days of the test but also I intend to be academically prepared to be even more successful in the future. These test do more than just assess my skills in English and history but also in time management and text interaction which includes highlighting, underlining, and annotating.
I would use the ideas that she presented in the talk during my teaching assistant (T.A.) sessions by doing something as simple as standing up straight especially during the periods where I’ll be teaching a lesson since standing up straight is a type of high-power pose. Since high-power poses will lead to an increase in testosterone and a decrease in cortisol, I will be able to feel more dominating and less stressed during those sessions. I honestly think that due to the decrease of stress that resulted from doing high-power poses, I will be able to feel more confident in teaching a lesson and thus allowing myself to teach a lesson effectively.
Reflecting back on the course I would say that unit 3 and 4 was the most useful. Articulating Your Vision and Plan in unit 3 made me put everything into perspective on what is expected of me as professional and student of Capella University. Although I still struggle with APA formatting in text citation, I assert that with constructive feedback, exposure to APA, repetition with discussions and essays, it has helped my tremendously. I am more confidence of my writing and learning how to cite with fewer mistakes. Using, “The Publication Manual of American Psychological Association” and Purdue OWL as my guide for writing as been a great tool.
During my time at UMass Amherst I was given an opportunity to be a teaching assistant (TA) for an integrated experience kinesiology course. I had taken the class the prior semester and the professor noticed my hard work, dedication, and leadership role with in my group and asked me to come work with her. This course is a group project that requires students to work together to build a wellness program for a target population with a chronic disease. At the end of the semester each group presents their project to professors in the kinesiology field and other professionals. The most important aspects of this course is working with in a group and making sure every decision and detail of the project is backed up with appropriate and legitimate research.
This morning was my first onsite clinical experience. My goals today included implementing the assessments and skills learned in lab into the onsite setting. I was really looking forward to actually performing some of the features we had practiced in lab on a real patient. I wanted to practice taking vitals, the assessment for HEENT and Hair, Skin & Nails in my clinical care. I also wanted to just familiarize myself with the typical flow of the morning routine in the hospital.
Through interacting with my students, I gained knowledge and insight on how to have students perceive me as a teacher and not as a peer. I have learned to speak with confidence and had my students address me as Ms. Brown. I also set rules during my lessons and asked my students to maintain respect while I was teaching. The rules I set in place included: raise a quiet hand to speak, talk only when you are called upon and respect each other and myself. By putting these rules in place I was able to show students that I was the leader in the lesson and not their peer. I also provided a stern tone when talking to students who were disrespectful. A student was continuously disrespectful to me, so I gave him a three strike rule that every period if he was disrespectful towards
One situation that was a positive experience was in my Senior ELA class and we were studying Thoreau’s Walden. I always became engaged and motivated when small group discussions occurred. Additionally, I was surprisingly intrigued more than other students by philosophers like Thoreau and Emerson. We were discussing the metaphorical imagery related to nature Thoreau used to discuss the human experience. Not only did I seem to be one of the few to participate frequently in the discussion but also my responses were deep and concise. I received praise from my teacher and peers, it was one of those few times I felt really proud of myself.
Over the course of this class I have pieced together many things about my own life that before went unnoticed. I am now able to see things in a bit of a different light. Now that I have been introduced to the realm of psychology I understand some of the reasons for behavior around me. I have learned that there is a reason for most everything and a lot of our behaviors and mental processes can be explained through psychology. Studies have been conducted for many years to try and pinpoint the source of our behavior and it is not something that most people think about every day. Having a better understanding of why we operate the way we do will help me to better understand myself and the others around me.
I had the first clinical experience today, and I can proudly say that I had a great time spending time with my resident and observe how certified nursing assistants performed cares for him. Since today was a first day of clinical, I was mostly just observing and still getting used to other residents and workers in the facility. One of the requirements that I had to do was having an interview with the given resident. I knew that using therapeutic communication techniques may be very helpful when interviewing my resident, and I have done as many techniques as I could.
Common sense will tell you that a school board has a fair amount of influence in a school district; however, it was not until I attended a meeting that I realized the extent that influence has in shaping a school. Prior to my attending a meeting, I had no idea what went on at school board meetings. My experience has taught me a great deal about the responsibilities of a school board, as well as how their enthusiasm and forward thinking have the ability to elevate a school to greater heights.
As I reflect on my past assessment process, I realized how much my assessments have changed over the years. In my early years, I used tests for informational recall as my assessments. I felt these were appropriate guidelines in which I needed to follow in order to substantiate a student’s grade. Every assignment or tests was given a point value and then based on the amount of points, a grade was given. Every student’s assessment was exactly the same, and the assessments did not contain any subjectivity. I felt confident in giving the grade based on a valid point system. However reflecting back, I see that I did not include any performance-based assessments or individual learning styles in my early assessment. I also did not take into consideration the individual needs of my students. My assessment approach was awful. I am embarrassed that I use to assess students in this manner.
