Common sense will tell you that a school board has a fair amount of influence in a school district; however, it was not until I attended a meeting that I realized the extent that influence has in shaping a school. Prior to my attending a meeting, I had no idea what went on at school board meetings. My experience has taught me a great deal about the responsibilities of a school board, as well as how their enthusiasm and forward thinking have the ability to elevate a school to greater heights.
A school board is a link that connects a community to its public school. They are the governing body of the school district, responsible for supporting the mission of educating students to reach their full potential. School boards matter because
The role of school boards “is to establish a vision for the community's schools that reflects a consensus of the board, community and district staff.” Although this is their main purpose, they also have to balance a district budget, create a district-yearly calendar, negotiate contract, construction, and approve district curriculum. (Stover 1) Although it might seem harsh to argue with school boards even though they do a lot, it is their job. They were appointed to lead and better the community, guide our children. If they are not mentally ready to be a leader, then why run for a school board member, the focus should be on the children, how to better education for them, and how to make sure they get the most out of every day coming to school.
By having school board meetings, it helps to see what the school’s needs. This is very important for the reason that this may be the only time that a concern parent or person voice might be heard. From this meeting, it was learned that the school board members are willing to help people that have concerns. An example, of this, was when the concern Pre-K parent was worried that she heard that Pre-K has been just a daycare. However, someone from the board mentioned to her that she would personally go with the parent the next day and show her how Pre-K is running during the day. This made the parent so happy because her concerns were being met. I have learned that school board members look out for the students and that they are the number one source that community members should go to if they have a concern or a suggestion to better their children’s
United States Constitution plays a major role in the management and operation of public schools. The management and operation of public schools fall under state according to the United States Constitution, article of the Tenth Amendment, which it affirms “the powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people” (U.S. Const. amend. X). Even though this particular amendment does not solely express the states to assume the accountability for offering education; however, its result has been no less. A number of state constitutions identify in detail the arrangement for coordinating and continuing a system of public education while others simply recognize the responsibility and the state legislature has the author...
Only now is evidence emerging testifying to the fact that much of the criticism leveled at public schools is exaggerated and misplaced. It is easy to forget that schools reflect what is happening in society, not cause it. Schools of today have recently shown that they are performing better than ever. Unfortunately, the traditional challenges confronting schools have increased dramatically and broadly as the world and students have changed. Now schools are facing drastic change -- necessary change that must take place quickly so students are able to cope in a dramatically changing world of the future. All of the criticism creates fear in teachers and administrators rather than a desire to embrace change.
the schools in that particular state, decides from where the school’s will get their money, regulates the licensing of teachers, and also decides on a minimum required amount of days that children need to be in school. Each school district also has a school board, who helps with all the major decisions within the school district. The members of these boards are elected in, and usually serve for a few years.
I went to the school board meeting on March 21, 2016 in Kanawha. The following people were at the council: Wayne Kronneman, Leah Deutsch, Ryan Hiscocks, Ryan Johnson, Jay Burgardt, Mona Buns, Gary Chizek, Todd Hammer, and Jon Harle. The others were mainly community member which included teachers, principals, parents and supporters. Some of the West Hancock staff included Mr. Peterson, Mrs. DeHart, Mrs. Bruns, Mr. Francis, Mrs. Gast and others. The other people who were there were parents and other community members. The first part of the meeting was the revision of the budget and presentation of the budget. This was given by Wayne Kronneman. He explained the budget of this year and how it compared to last years. Also he also talked about the budget for next year. After that they had a discussion with the
The AA meeting I attended took place at a church. The church that holds the meeting has a beginner AA meeting that meets Monday nights at 7 pm. However, I decided to go to the regularly meeting which takes place an hour later at 8 pm. I felt as though I would get more out of the regular meetings and get a sense of what regular AA members talk about. Before arriving at the meeting, I was a little anxious because I felt like as though I would be out of place, and I would be intruding on the members who come to the meetings for support. Also before attending, for some unknown reason, I imagined the meeting would to be similar to AA meeting featured in movies. Contrary to what I thought, the meeting was completely different. When I arrived at
Attending an NA meeting during finals was one of my smarter decisions, as I procrastinate my work until the very last minute this week. However, in my opinion, going to a meeting was a good type of procrastination compared to other things I could be doing. Instead of going with the same friend this time, I asked a friend who was struggling with a ________ addiction. Not knowing that I was aware of his addiction, I asked him to join so I didn’t have to go alone; and he was more than happy to join me. I was very happy he agreed to join, because hopefully it helps him with his personal addiction, and he continues to return to the meetings.
...bal markets and the desire to maintain leadership in the world of science and technology.” The following recommendations would be made to the school board in order to improve the school’s performance. Schools do not meet annual yearly progress staff should be reorganized. .There should be a diversity of teacher considering the cultural diversity. Invest in more technology in schools and after school and Saturday school programs It is when school boards, administrators and teacher work together to make education attainable for all students regardless of culture race or disability,
This is a reflective essay based on my attendance at a multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting whilst on my two-week placement at a local mental health day hospital. The aim of this essay is to discuss the importance of the multidisciplinary team within the mental health environment and discuss factors that can influence the success or failure of multidisciplinary teams.
The news constantly shows the negatives in school boards and only shines a light on the corrupt ones. If the good in school boards was made more publicly, I believe that many would have a different opinion when they heard about school boards. Most school boards are very good at using the tax dollars toward things that will actually aid the education of the children. Each district in America is different, each has their own economic difficulties and problems. What one district needs for their schools could be the total opposite from what another might need so, school boards make custom decisions for their schools. School board members bring diverse opinions and backgrounds. They “ensure that different voices get heard, the marginalized have someone to appeal to, and different concerns get weighed” (Hess, 2010 pg.16). If school boards were taken away then the decisions would be made more like a business, we would lose the “moral, and social responsibility” each school board member feels (Ravitch, 2010
Some of the advantages that school board members may come across is good positive feedback from the community. For example it could be getting a new school bus for the school, or approving to build a new baseball field. However there also comes some disadvantages. Some disadvantages are having negative feedback from the community. They may not like what certain board members are doing for the school. They also may be made at how you have to get rid of a teacher, and that could really upset the school district. Board members try there best to see the students excel and the school.
Most of us hear well and so don’t give much thought to how we hear. Hearing starts with a very complex set of actions within the outer, middle and inner ear. Auditory Processing - Is what happens when the brain recognizes, interprets and can respond to the varied sounds around us such as music, language and the environment in which we live. It involves both hearing and listening and is simply defined as what the brain does with what it hears. For example, it tells us the barking we hear is a dog.
From the beginning, where we were unfamiliar with each other and became a team, my team and I had started to learn each other name and getting to know each other. Throughout each meeting, we slowly start to feel more comfortable and open minded with each other. Not only are we getting familiar with each other, each meeting that was held we progress of becoming an effective team member, we learn our strengths and weaknesses of everyone. During the meetings, we learn many concepts from the textbook, “Communicating in Small Groups: Principles and Practices” by Steven A. Beebe and John T. Masterson. We were able to learn different types of concept in the textbook and utilized it as a team to complete certain tasks. The three concepts that impacted my team and I are human
It is not everyday when you can say the majority of your college class is you talking and the teacher listening, this is seminar. Coming from a family where heated debates were present almost daily, I already know if I were passionate about a topic I would never pass up an opportunity to express my opinions. For me, seminar has allowed me to grow in this confidence of expressing my thoughts as well as learning from others opinions. Having come from a high school that stressed the importance of student participation, I was not surprised by the amount I would actually have to speak in this class, however I was surprised by the importance of disagreements and the proper way to analyze text through underlining, highlighting and questioning and how it could aid my overall understanding of a text. Being a psychology major and extremely interested in social justice issues, seminar also opened my eyes up to the interesting perspectives of the strength of human nature.
