Over the course of this class I have pieced together many things about my own life that before went unnoticed. I am now able to see things in a bit of a different light. Now that I have been introduced to the realm of psychology I understand some of the reasons for behavior around me. I have learned that there is a reason for most everything and a lot of our behaviors and mental processes can be explained through psychology. Studies have been conducted for many years to try and pinpoint the source of our behavior and it is not something that most people think about every day. Having a better understanding of why we operate the way we do will help me to better understand myself and the others around me.
Our behavior at times can seem a little out of the ordinary. People do not always conform to the behavior that is accepted by everyone else. From time to time people will stray from the beaten path and it tends to make them stand out. I used to just kind of look the other way without really giving it a second thought. Now when I look at behavior that is not exactly normal I am able to try and come up with a hypothesis on the causes of their behavior. I have a co-worker that is well known for being a compulsive liar. He likes to fabricate the most unbelievable stories and events that there is obviously no way ever could have happened. I think we may have all met someone like this before. So instead of just nodding my head or calling him out on his lies I now find myself trying to understand what they mean. Why is it he lies about these things? Through further analysis I have formed a hypothesis as to why he does it. He grew up with several siblings. One of these siblings has special needs and requires a great deal of...

...ork I now am more motivated to strive ahead and move forward and I better understand why it is that I do it everyday. I understand our need for self improvement and I know now that I tend to agree more with the expectancy theory of motivation. As a leader of junior personnel I have learned that people are motivated in different ways. I can now figure out what their motivation is and provide them with a means to an end so that they will know what it is they are working for. This will cause them to work harder or more efficiently to achieve their own personal goals. So whether I am at home with my family or I am out at a ballgame it seems there will always be something I am doing or thinking that involves psychology. Psychology was a much bigger part of my life than I ever realized. It is involved in how I think, learn, behave, and interact with everything around me.
Chapter 4 discusses the several states of consciousness: the nature of consciousness, sleep and dreams, psychoactive drugs, hypnosis, and meditation. Consciousness is a crucial part of human experience, it represents that private inner mind where we think, feel, plan, wish, pray, omagine, and quietly relive experiences. William James described the mind as a stream of consciousness, a continuous flow of changing sensations, images thoughts, and feelings. Consciousness has two major parts: awareness and arousal. Awareness includes the awareness of the self and thoughts about one's experiences. Arousal is the physiological state of being engaged with the environment. Theory of mind refers to individuals understanding that they and others think,
As I planed to take this class, I thought this course would be like all other general education courses. I believed that it would be of little use to me. However, after attending the first class, my view has changed completely. I applied each and every theory to my life.
As the semester finally approaches the finish line, I revisit my past work to compare and contrast how this class has developed me into a successful writer at the college level. Throughout the year my writing style has developed and become broader as I have learned how to incorporate more of my personal views as well as reliable, unbiased information. This portfolio is a representation of how many things I have learned along the way while being an English 102 student.
With college right around the corner and taking a college course gave a real sense of how college classes are going to work giving me an edge over all of the other students going to college that didn’t take a dual enrollment course. Dual enrollment was honestly one of the best decisions I made in my academic career because like what I was saying this class taught me the inner workings of how most assignment are going to be turned in, what it means to be self-reliant/ on your own have no help with assignment from your parents, experiencing a course that only a handful of assignment rather than a ton of assignment ends up making up over eighty percent of your grade (getting you to work extra hard so you won’t fail) and finally that you have to actually interact with the professor/teacher if you need help or are having trouble with an
While taking psychology this past few months I have realized why I am who I am. I finally learned why I bite my finger nails and chew on things that probably are not good for my teeth. I also learned why I can take things that people might tell them and better myself, but others may cry. When I was younger I had a hard time regulating my emotions which lead to me externalizing my problem. This lead to me always playing rough. Most girls do not play this way, but this actually helped release my anger in a positive way. I also developed a resilience to stress, during times I find myself stressed out. I am finally why I am who I am because of the parenting style my parents used when I was younger. Most people wonder why they are who they are and
The most surprising information that I learned this week was just how the profession of being a psychologist is mispresented in the entertainment world of today. Obviously, I am referring to the countless shows and movies that dramatize the profession for the sake of increased ratings or ticket sales. After doing some research, I could find a few exceptions. Reality shows such as “hoarders” or “intervention” portray real situations with real people and real professionals. If you watch these shows alongside the made for TV drama or movies, the difference is clear. One is a true representation of the what it means to be a psychology professional and the other is a fictitious portrayal of an over dramatized character. This being
Health psychology has been an appealing subject to me because it is relatable on many levels. Of the topics we have covered in class I think unit 3 have left the deepest impression. Stress is something everyone can relate to but probably understood on the minimum. Stress is a common experience for university students and without an exception I fall victim to it every time an exam or presentation comes up. Learning about this topic, what stress is, what it does to your body, how it affects your behavior has lead me to reflect upon past experiences in a way that I can learn to better cope with the effects of stress.
For this reflection on the learning development among students in my practicum, I will focus on both the freshmen World History class and the AP Psychology class. Focusing on these two groups is appropriate because of the different changes that are occurring among them. The teacher has to recognize the differences among each group in the areas of cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical, in order to assure that the students are engaged in the learning environment and gaining a maximum level of understanding regarding the material.
Throughout this course I have learned a lot about psychology. I will talk about how it affected me personally, socially, organizationally/societal, and the lasting impact it had in my life.
I understand my styles and behaviors better now. Too bad I didn’t take this course earlier in life. Understanding myself will help me understand other people better I believe. That will be helpful concidering the profession I intend to have.
Taking this class this semester has really changed the way that I have viewed myself when it has come to work and the different companies that I have worked before. I have taken a psychology class before but I have never taken one that relates to management and organizations. This class has really helped me answer different questions such as why I was unhappy at some jobs, enjoyed some managers over others, and what motivated me to work hard at jobs. It’s good to learn that there are different terms and definitions for different feeling and things I experienced at jobs to know that their other people experiencing these things also. I will be going into a management position after I graduate, and this class helped me to learn many different ways to go about managing and things to avoid to keep a positive working environment.
The Introduction to Liberal Arts class has taught me valuable skills that will be continuously refined throughout my years at Monmouth College. The skills and strategies that were introduced in this class and were refined was close analysis, annotations, and reflections on a work. Being assigned multiple close reading and analysis assignments throughout the class refined my writing skills. Simply writing more in the class helped me improve my skill on how to delve into a reading assignment and being able to discuss it in writing and conversation. Annotating assignments for specific reasons such as vocab, themes, and specific questions expanded my thought process when analyzing the reading. After annotating a reading, I was able to refer to the text to back up my discussion points in class when the class was conversing over specific points in the text. Reflecting on the readings that were assigned, connected to many of the main themes of the class. These
There was a significant amount of knowledge given in this course, involving concepts that in our teaching career will be extremely important. From this course I have gained a significant amount of learning experiences. I had the pleasure learning about how the educational system has come to be what it is today and who were the important people in the creation of the public education, like Horace Mann. Watching the videos and reading the chapters required has opened my eyes more of how a teacher should respond to different situations involving a student, For example when we read the chapter on the laws that revolve around the educators and the students. I had absolutely no clue that students had rights while in school property. Another learning
I took this class because it aligns with other studies I have done. I have completed life coaching certificates and other psychology and mental classes. My expectations for this class are to learn what it means to educate and be educated. In life and business, I can see where understanding individual and/or group motivations can help show the bigger picture and give ideas on how to proceed.
The Human Development’s concepts, theories and so on give me a better understanding to explain why people act in different kind of situation that they have. Make me more appreciate the value of taking Human Development class.
