My journey as a nursing student at a North Dakota State University began in August, 2017. The transition from a pre-nursing student to a nursing student has been very challenging, yet rewarding experience of my life. As I reflect on my past two semesters of my nursing program, I am amazed to realize how much I have accomplished. Not only have I grown in my role as a professional nursing student, but my cultural competent skills and integrity has also enhanced. My one-year experience in the nursing program has improved my critical thinking, communication, professional values and I have grown in leadership and communication abilities from the group project and clinical experiences. However, as I progress in nursing program, I realized that professional values do not limit to self-presentation. Professional values serve as a foundation for nursing practice. The Cultural Competency Modules taught me that the cultural awareness is key in providing competent care to the client. This assignment provided me the opportunity to reflects on my own stereotypes and judgements with regard to different cultures. When reflecting, it is very striking to see how much my cultural awareness has increased.
Clinical Competence
During the beginning of the nursing program, I was not very confident on myself. I used to overwork myself thinking about completing even simple assignment. While completing the first portion of Health Behavior Change project, I was very nervous and incompetent in carrying out simple task. As we started to do more lab assessment, nursing practice becomes clearer. I was very nervous for my first competency but as I progress in the semester, I become more confident in myself. I learned by lab competency that the more we practice the better we become.
My goal in clinical competence is to practice skills that I learned in the class. I want to demonstrate clinical competence while practicing nursing skills in clinical setting by fall
