My Writing Experience

This year was a true test to my abilities as a writer. Until my last year of middle school, I could not write. In eighth grade, I was forced to learn how. I was drilled with grammar, and I was tasked with multiple essays. This year, I was able to take the skills I learned in eighth grade and put them to the test. When given an assignment this year, I was able to approach it with a little more ease. I am able to sit down and gather my thoughts onto a paper. When given a prompt, I am able to express multiple ideas as well as produce multiple ways to format the paper. Once I have begun writing, I tend to overthink my essay and I lose trust in myself. This year has truly been a journey of learning to trust myself, especially when it comes to writing. The journey to success has only begun and will continue throughout high school. Once my writing is complete, the next step is to revise and proofread. Proofreading is simultaneously my greatest feat and downfall. I tend to lose myself, and points, when I focus solely on the message and not on the grammar skills I have worked so hard to achieve. It is a skill I have been working on my entire life. I tend to write as I talk, an ability that can be beneficial and detrimental. I work hard on each essay, and will never turn in an assignment that does not comply with my own personal standards as well as the teachers. In addition, this year has truly challenged me to escape my comfort zone and explore new genres of writing. I tend to succeed when writing narratives and short stories, whereas this year we wrote more research based pieces.
