My RIP companion essay was a complete mess with no structure in the first draft. I believe it was because I had procrastinated to complete both the first drafts for the RIP project and essay. I finished my RIP project then moved on to my companion essay, and the transition was vastly different because in the RIP project I was writing for a different audience than in the companion essay, which was an academic audience. In addition, I forgot that we had been given a prompt with specific instructions and guidelines for the companion essay, which gave the structure for the essay. My professor, Delany-Ullman also points out that “For most essays, you should NOT include your textual evidence in your topic sentence. Your topic sentence should make
2. Analysis: Now that you have a good knowledge base, start analyzing the arguments of the essays you're reading. Clearly define the claims, write out the reasons, the evidence. Look for weaknesses of logic, and also strengths. Learning how to write an essay begins by learning how to analyze essays written by others.
Throughout my essay I tried to not summarize the article and I feel like I was successful at not summarizing and instead analyzing.
As I chose to take this class and better my writing skills at a college level, I knew this class was going to be difficult. With a total of four essays to write I knew I had to be on my game from the beginning. Throughout durations of this class, I have learned how to become more responsible, plan ahead of time, and how to become a better writer. With each mistake made i have been able to learn and improve. An Ad Analysis, Comparative Analysis, Narrative, and an Argumentative Essay are the four papers we had to write for the course.
I enjoyed writing the analysis paper because I got to discover why Donald Trump is such a popular political candidate. It was fun to watch how crazy his tweets could get. I also enjoyed writing this essay because I felt like I grew a lot from last semester. Last semester, I never had a clear process or clear idea before I started writing my first draft. This essay I worked through my ideas and was not afraid to share them with others. In all writing classes before this I was very shy about my writing and I am trying to get away from that so that I can get help and make my essays better. I think that by trying to reach out and be more open about my ideas, I was able to make my writing a lot better.
Oscar Wilde once said, “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” I feel that this quote does a really good job of expressing who I am as a person, and I know that the reason I have been so successful is because I am an optimist and focus on the positive rather than the bad things in life. I am the type of person who sees the glass as “half-full,” even in the worst of situations. This way of living had led me to become successful in numerous aspects of my life, from academics to my own personal growth.
Furthermore, a way that I can increase my memory and my understanding of my classes and subjects is by improving my ability to take notes. I am currently under the impression that my skills at taking detailed and descriptive notes will improve as I continue my college education. As of this moment, my notes are enough to achieve a passing grade, but not enough to succeed like I intend to. However, over the course of Honors Colloquium, I do believe that my notes have improved for the score of my quizzes are a slight reflection of the quality of my notes. Additionally, I once asked my grader, of the Honors Colloquium course, what he felt was the best approach to improve my note-taking skills and he replied with something along the lines of, “It
As the quarter progressed, these five weeks had been enormous journey for me. I learned a lot of new skills and methods as a writer in your class. The methods and skills I learned in this class were very beneficial and helpful to me to improve my writing; not only my writing, but also my critical thinking skills and creating skills. This reflection functions as a guide to the five weeks of my work in writing 39A class. My work in this class felt like a fast train ride as I thought I did well in my first major assignment, which was writing a poem, not outstanding, but capable enough to have a set of good commentary. However, when I did my second major assignment, when I got the feedback from draft one, I saw I did not do as well as I did in my first major assignment, so I had to review it again the way I wrote, so that way I can develop it better for draft two. For my second assignment, I felt like I
By the time I became mature enough to listen, my grandmother always reminded me of one concept; education comes first. Despite this encouragement to work hard to receive my education, school and I didn 't take to each other straightaway. After struggling every day, for such long time, just to gain the knowledge of the basics, I knew something needed to change. Soon after carrying out some exploration into my reasons for struggling and putting in persistent effort, I realized I could progress in school. It became evident to me that I could succeed against anything I put my mind to.
The greatest difficulty that I came across doing the first essay was retracing the past, retracing the sadness. Having to bring back sad memories that made my life terrible at the time. Doing the essay, I learned that I have gone through a lot of crap. I was sinking in quicksand and now I stand on the quicksand like it is rock solid. I am proud of myself. I was able to turn my life around and be the person that I am today. I might have the potential to be a good writer someday. People compliment on my writing skills every now and then when I write something long. That makes me feel like a real student. I say that because an old History teacher of mine used to tell kids to be students when they were not doing their work.
