Writing has always been a tough task for me throughout my whole life as a student. I’ve always knew that I would become a better writer as I progressed through school. This years English class was definitely an eye opener for me because I learned helpful strategies that will help me succeed as a writer. Throughout the first semester of my English class, I learned how to annotate and break down articles to make it more understandable for me. This semester in English class, we learned how to peer review other classmates articles and learned how to work as a group to write an essay. Annotating articles was something that I was already used to doing since high school, so I had an idea on my approach already. As I proceeded through most of these articles, I learned new strategies such as brainstorming before I had to write down my comments about the article. When I read each paragraph and write down comments about them, it gives me a better understanding of the paragraph so I don’t have to assume or guess. Structuring an essay in that format really doesn’t make you a good writer since all you know how is an intro, body and conclusion. Incorporating my ideas from articles into an essay has also helped me become a better writer because I have more insight on what’s being told. Annotating articles helped me gain better understanding of learning goals number one and three. It helped me by showing different examples on how readers read and the way writers write beyond the university. I’ve learned plenty of new techniques that will help me in the long run in terms of academic writing. It also taught me to be more engaged when i’m reading through the text so it gives me a better understanding on what’s being read. All in all, annotations helped me through the reading and writing process and I think it’ll make me succeed in both
The first four weeks of CR510 have prompted this student to reflect on her years of teaching in the public school setting. Having experienced many similar complexities to the ones in the text, this student is sympathetic to the challenges facing those in the education system and is eager to find opportunities to offer a better solution for all involved. CR510 has strengthened this student's belief that a third party neutral can provide valuable benefits to educational systems at all levels.
Without doubt besides to know how to write a sentence, it is vital to know the parts of an essay. In this course I had the opportunity to go through different types of essays that helped me to understand how an introduction, thesis, body paragraphs, and conclusion work. Also, how these parts are connected together and make a different function depending of what type of essay I am writing for example, argumentation, narration, process, or any other. Although, I cannot say I became a professional writer after have learned this points, I can say, I became a better one.
When going through life learning is an everyday occurrence as each day is constantly filled with information that is used throughout the course of your life. Each day we get stronger and stronger in whatever we decide to put our minds to, weather that be academics, sports, our jobs we are constantly learning and growing on a daily basis. This semester I have grown in English as I personally felt that through the English 102 course I have been able to grasp some key concepts and writing techniques that will better me for the future. In this class there was a list of goals and outcomes that the instructor felt would be achievable and the best way to learn throughout the course. In each goal throughout this process I feel like I have improved to some degree but there is other things that I do need to touch up on a bit more to further my writing education outside the classroom.
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
When I first entered this class, I already knew that it wasn’t going to be easy just because I 'm not good with putting things into words and explaining myself with proper grammar. I can honestly say English 101 has really inspired me to be a better writer. This class affected me in a lot of ways it showed me that writing takes time and you can 't expect a paper to be great without any revising or editing. That has always been a mistake of mine, I would tend to free write a lot it seemed to be the only way I could get my thoughts processed on a paper. I would forget periods, commas and misspell words without even noticing. I never cared much for punctuation, but once I got into this class I knew it was much needed. The topics we wrote on were not just any random topics which in a way made it more interesting to write about things that are actually important and things our generation should be informed about.
Over the past semester I have learned many things in my English class, educationally and through life lessons. Ms. Henry took the tedious, standard, subject of English and turned it into moral and intellectual lessons we can use in our daily lives. I latched onto the secret life of bees, serial, and the debate, out of the topics we went over this semester.
To be completely honest, this year has been nothing short of a disaster. Partially due to this class, which it is my fault for taking the class in the first place when I was obviously not qualified to take an AP Literature class. It started out fun, but became more and more stressful as the year went on. My mental capacity has reached its limit, and my physical health isn 't in the best condition either due to the late nights I have spent on homework. However, despite it all, I have learned a great deal from this class. Not only from the curriculum, but I have also learned some of my own limitations and realized some faults that I need to mend. This semester entering English 102 I thought of myself as a bad writer with a lot to say and no idea how to coordinate it or express it. A big reason why I took English stretch composition was to strengthen my writing skills. I feel like I have a better idea of where to put my ideas but I really need help with the technical writing and how to do research papers correctly. My concerns over the semester are not the same as they were at the beginning, they have changed. One of my concerns was that I wouldn’t know how to organize a college essay, but that concern is gone now. A new concern I have this semester is my run on sentences and the punctuation and the lack thereof.
This trimester I began the class English 101 with mixed feelings. Depending on the topic and style, I could really enjoy writing. However, there were occasionally times where I just did not feel much inspiration, and consequently, my writing quality was not exactly remarkable. My previous course to English 101 was AP Literature, where I learned how to analyze writing and write powerful papers. Although, to my disadvantage for this class, the teacher was more concerned about content than presentation and grammar technicalities. I learned to create good ideas and responses, and while I did possess the ability to convey them with proficiency, I could not express myself at a college level. Nonetheless, I can happily report that I have acquired these skills throughout English 101, learning to curb my near addiction to prepositional phrases, in addition to halting my use of coordinating conjunctions to begin sentences. I find it pleasing to read and compare my first essay to my latest one, seeing all of the differences and enhancements. My writing has improved through the trials of in-depth analyses and short deadlines, enabling me to perform my best no matter the style or topic. Up until this year, before taking the class intermediate composition, I thought I was a terrible writer. I was right. Writing isn’t something that I enjoy doing, nor am I good at. Writing is difficult for me because I’m not very good at explaining things in a professional manner, that can be easily well written. While writing you are expected to make little to no mistakes, which is not something I’m great at. I am so much better at explaining things with verbal words rather than written words. I had not taken any extra writing classes before this year rather than the mandatory ones. Like I had stated before, I hate writing, with a passion. Throughout this fall semester, I have learned many things. Before this class, I have never had to buckle down and plan out my writing so tediously. The many outlines, rough drafts, and final drafts have crafted me into a much better writer than I would have ever expected to become. While I have always considered English as one of my strong subjects, through this class I have learned that English has many more components than I originally thought. One of the most substantial of these components is a transitional sentence and through this class and the writing practice it has brought me, I have learned how to properly write them.
ading annotations have improved the way I read. I am more organized and annotating is a good way to track what I have read. By annotating I remember the information I read longer than when I don’t. All the reading has given me practice annotating and I now annotate all the articles that I get from other classes because this has helped me turn annotating in a habit. The reading that I was most engaged in was Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space by Brent Staples. Brent told his story beautifully and I felt that I identified with Staples because I have faced discrimination myself. As my English 101 class comes to an end, I have realized how much I have transformed as a writer. In this essay, I am going to explain what I realized my strengths and weaknesses are as a writer and how they have manifested themselves throughout the quarter. I was skeptical at first coming into this class knowing that English takes formidable work and dedication, but I am very proud of the progress I have made. We completed a great deal of work throughout the quarter; from grammar exercises, summary reviews, and two challenging essays. Throughout the quarter I found myself improving in each category. As a writer, my skills and confidence have developed into more clarity and thought, something I have always wanted to be, as a result of a well constructed class that led to a superb educational experience.
To annotate is to make notes directly on a text as one reads and rereads it, identifying significant features, discovering patterns of features, and speculating on meanings. It is a crucial means of paying close attention to a text whether one is preparing for a class discussion, generating ideas for an essay, or just experiencing the richness of a text for pleasure. So fundamental to what readers do, annotation is comparable to hammers for carpenters and spoons for cooks, according to John E. Schwiebert (Reading and Writing from Literature. 2nd ed. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 2001).
Before I came to English 101 I was more of a raw writer than most people. Although I would write my papers filled with great content, I would also have many problems with my grammer and organization. Throughout my time in this class I have developed and trained multiple areas of my writing. Some of the areas that I have improved the most have been grammer, organization, and MLA format. These areas have lead to an evolution in my writing that has given me a new level of understanding in English. Which has provided me with the skills that will endow me to achieve success in english 102.
