Going into composition one; my first college english class, I was nervous and felt that I was not prepared to compose well written essays. All throughout highschool it was a blessing and a curse, I had teachers who never actually read any students work. They would just give you the grade for turning it in with the correct format and amount of pages. That obviously had a negative effect and I never really knew if what I was writing made sense or has good structure. I was relieved to hear my professor in college say he wanted to see growth by the end of the semester. He also said that no papers with word generated paragraphs just to fit the page requirement, will be deemed acceptable. The first paper assigned was a personal essay, something
Writing essays was never my forte, it just never came easy to me like it would to others. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. During this summer semester, I was able to grow as a writer, and gain a more positive attitude toward how I write and a better feel for writing in college. Writing a paper is a process in which there are many different stages. In high school I would never write outlines or any sort of pre planning work. Other struggles I encountered in my writing were my theses, and framing quotes.
I am currently an English 160 student who is hoping to move on to the next course, which is English 161. I understand the requirements for English 161. It require students to explore a topic in some depth and conduct independent research related to that topic. Conducting research allows students to learn what it is like to participate in academic culture, posing questions about important issues and developing an argument in response to what others have said. It expected students to learn the most valuable skill in college, which is critical thinking. Students have to be able to read challenging readings. Although I still have problems with English, I think I’m qualified to move on.

If you are not able to effectively express your thoughts and ideas in college, it’s really hard to be able to complete anything. From my experience, writing itself has never been much of a challenge. I found that the standard college essay is at least 3-4 pages. Some classes even require 1-2 pages. I’ve found that despite the length, the most important factor about a paper is its content. As a writer I hope to develop better time management. I tend to have writers block a lot when I write, but I think that’s mainly because I’m so picky with the way I want to sound when I’m trying to express a point or an idea. I know that the writing skills I have learned and developed are skills that will be used throughout my college career and even outside of school.
Transitioning from high school to college can be overwhelming. Before English 1301, I thought that I did not have to worry about being prepared for college. I quickly realized that my little background in writing essays was not going to be enough for college. Writing is not just something that I will use in English classes. In college, I will have to use effective writing skills in all my classes to complete research papers, essay tests and communicate to professors. Throughout my education, writing strategies persisted to be something that did not come easy to me. I dreaded writing because I could never find ways to get my thoughts down on paper. Ironically, a class that petrified me due to the amount of writing that was required ended up helping me in so many ways. English 1301 and my professor prepared me so much for college and real life.
Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.
English 111 was different from what I expected a college English course to be. I was expecting to have to read books and analyze the meaning of the themes. I found it challenging to have to analyze different websites and design our own. This was different from what I experienced in high school English classes. This course required that I expand beyond my comfort zone when writing essays. This required that I put more time and dedication into projects. It allowed me to learn valuable skills to use in other courses in college and I learned what abilities I need to concentrate on. I carry with me the abilities to use rhetoric devices to analyze websites, research techniques to polish the ethos of my papers, and the knowledge that I need to refine using other sources of media (i.e. websites, PowerPoints, etc.) to present an argument from English 111.
All through our academic years we were taught how to write. Starting with elementary, when the form of writing was first introduced, it consisted of compositions with simple prompts about our weekends. Now, that there was an idea of how to write, middle school English teachers began teaching students a writing format. This format is commonly known as the five-paragraph essay, which entailed an introduction, three supporting body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The five-paragraph essay began being strongly implemented in high school and it leads to many debates whether or not it benefited students proceeding into college. I believe the five-paragraph format was helpful for high school students starting out, but is not as beneficial to freshman
Over the past semester, I have found the most challenging part of this course to simply be the transition from high school composition classes to college. Because writing expectations are so different in college than in high school, even with AP and Dual Enrollment “college level” classes, I first found myself being overwhelmed with the pressure to write the perfect first draft. The pressure came from knowing how much a final draft of a paper contributed to my grade. This left me sitting in front of my computer for hours at a time with thoughts of what I wanted to say racing through my head, but unable to deliver these thoughts into organized, structured sentences. I learned, through writing my persuasive essay, that instead of trying to write the paper start to finish and already in its perfect form, it is easier for me to look at the paper through its different components and focus on them individually, then work to best organize my ideas fluently.
I grew up in a small, close-minded, community that had insignificant minority people throughout it. I did not have a lot of experience with racial and ethnic groups. I did, however, have some experiences with children as well as adults who had learning disabilities as well as autism spectrum disorder, down syndrome, and fetal alcohol syndrome. When I was in elementary school, I had a classmate who had down syndrome; she was in and out of our classroom periodically throughout the day. In junior high; I was a peer helper during leadership class and in high school, I was a peer helper. During high school, I also was a Special Olympic instructor which was very rewarding. Right now, I feel that I could someday handle the responsibility of meeting
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work in see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded. Some of the skills I had shocked me as I didn’t think I had those capabilities in me.
During my last 3 years of high school I volunteered with a basketball program called the Ottawa Shooting Stars which was the club I played for during my first 3 years playing competitive basketball. The program that the Shooting Stars are running is called Small Ball. It is program for developing skills but mostly for having some fun and introducing young players to the game of basketball. It manly focuses on Fundamentals such as dribbling, shooting, footwork and passing at the most basic level. The age groups of the program range from 4-7 years old. When I first started volunteering I was in grade 10 and our coach had asked us to help out with a program he was running on Friday nights at our high school gym. At the start I was a new volunteer and did not have much responsibility but by my second year I was fully immersed in the program. Each night I
As I look back on my schooling I can’t believe how many papers I’ve written throughout my life. Naturally as I’ve grown up, my writing has developed from learning how to write sentences all the way up to the pages of essays that consist of deeper criteria. I know for a fact that I’m a better writer now than I was before. College writing is more challenging and I’ve had to learn how to adjust to it.
The first time I ever picked up the Bible I remember reading about Adam and Eve. They were the first humans ever created by God. They were in nature “pure”. God told Adam before Eve was created that he was not to eat of the tree of good and evil. After that, God warned that in the day he did eat of that tree man would surely die. After Eve was created Satan changed into a serpent to tempt her. He told her that God had lied to her. He said that she wouldn't die, in fact, she would become like God. She would know everything, just as God does. Eve allowed herself to be deceived. After she took that bite she sealed the fate of all mankind. However we were not doomed yet. Even after being kicked out of the garden we still had God on our side. He gave us Jesus Christ. Who went through so much pain and torment in order to save us for the mistake Adam and Eve made. I know so much pain and suffering in the world and I wonder where it originated. How do I escape from the sin of the world and be safe. The answer came in the healing and powerful words of the bible. My pastor read me my favorite scripture of the bible a long time ago. I will never forget it. “And the LORD God said, [It is] not good that the man should be alone; I will make him and help meet for him.” (Genesis; chapter two). I wondered was alone in my struggle. I had figured that I would be fighting alone. God would never leave or forsake us. I learned this the hard way.
Sadly, my next school year was my worst ever. I had poor grades in all of my subjects and I did poorly in many subjects, but there was one class I didn’t mind struggling in it because it peaked my interest. English my junior year was my favorite class even if I did not do as well as I wished. I read books that interested me and I wrote essays on things I enjoyed writing about. While writing has never been a strong subject for me, I have always loved writing. I enjoy writing about things that interest me and that I have a passion for. Intro to composition has changed the way I think about writing, it allowed me to write about what I wanted while guiding me to write more intellectual and specific through constant revisions and one on one conferences with my
Much like Benjamin Franklin believed, I feel that a person should take advantage of the time the person has in life with activities a person wants to do or needs to do. A person should not spend much time on activities the person does not want to do. Life is way too short to concern oneself with work or other activities one wants nothing to do with all the time. When possible, I try to forget about my responsibility and just let go of the ‘things’ that do not matter to me. I think a person should try to occupy oneself with something productive, worthwhile, or necessary at all times. Even though a person’s life is left up to a person to live, I cannot imagine thinking that I owe my time to society through working a job that I simply despise. I am a compassionate person, but I do not owe anyone anything regarding my time.
