You could leave the class and head to a study hall if your school supports one. In summary, bad study habits produce bad grades good study habits produce good grades.
Even more troubling, a number of students would begin to “act out” in a negative, attention-seeking manner. Technology is simply less personal. An unspoken focus of school is student-teacher interaction. The teachers become trustable authority figures and example setters. Many kids crave emotional connections at school because they are unable to get them at home.
Alfie Kohn’s proposal to stop grading students sounds great except that it oversimplifies problems in education and what really harms students. In his own article Kohn states the obvious objections towards grades, yet dismisses them and interjects that a gradual reduction in grading will eventually lead to more successful students. However, schools around the world have grading systems similar to the U.S. grading system yet their students continue to thrive. The problem is not grades, the problem is more complex and complicated. What harms students is inequality, unmotivated teachers, Common Core, lack of creative outlets, expensive tuition, and student mental health.
If we are hoping our students will be life-long learners, why would they continue learn in the grade-less post-graduation world? (Schwartz, 2011) Grades do motivate students to do better but, grades cause students to want to get a good grade instead of fully mastering the material. They look at school just trying to pass which promotes cheating on tests and homework. They also will choose the material that is the easiest and choose a class with a professor who doesn’t care to raise their GPA. School is supposed to be about learning and understanding new material to help gain knowledge and a new way of thinking.
Some of the salient points of the NCLB are the way in which the act is presented and handled. NCLB approach has a set standard for managing schools that are progressing poorly with education. The inferences for the results seem like they are very incomplete and only hurting the student during the reforming of the failure. John points out the invaluable time spent on teaching to the test, therefore we are not teaching the right educational information to the students. Another problem of negative issues outweighing the positive issues is quite a turning point of discussion for the reform of the act.
People claim that a second language only adds to the workload of students, and then furthermore adding stress and even anxiety. Some people also believe that learning a foreign language is a waste of time. However this is not true. Later in life, students that decided to take a foreign language in high school often don't remember basic conversational skills from this language. Some people think that when students choose their classes, they should not have to choose a foreign language unless they want to.
As a graduating senior I feel that this information and security is vital to a child. This will help a student become more engaged and confident in their answers. They don't have to worry about being judged by fellow classmates and ridiculed for being a slower paced learner. These schools aren’t the only solution to this problem they also provide classes for children and teens nowadays, they have web programs , counseling , textbooks that break concepts down and allow them to be easier for them to further comprehend.
On the contrary, students view homework as a punishment for the lack of performance in class. According to Coutts (2004), “In such circumstances the students are required to complete the work without both the academic and social support found in the classroom. For some students this can be a challenge because they might not have the support from family members, so they feel helpless and confused. Although some people are against homework, I believe that homework is a valuable tool for education because it helps students take initiative, helps students grasp concepts, and helps them build on their own interest. Quoted from Marzano and Pickering (2007),”If a district or school discards homework altogether, it will be throwing away a powerful instructional tool” (page 79).
The amount of paper that is used in schools would decrease drastically and benefit the environment if technology was enforced in schools. Anybody in school would work more efficiently if they had the proper technology at school. Researching information from a textbook is nowhere near as beneficial as learning from any electronic device. If a student were to use a computer to study, data would be improved simply because textbooks cannot update their information as frequently as an electronic device can. Receiving information from a computer can increase intelligence because computers adapt to the person controlling it.
“Creating presentations, learning to differentiate reliable from unreliable sources on the Internet, maintaining proper online etiquette, and writing emails; these are all vital skills that your students can learn in the classroom and master before graduation” (Montano 1). For example, many high schools students do not even know how to make a simple presentation or find reliable sources for research. This is due to the fact that technology usage has not been a large interest in the education system and therefore students do not quite know how to work their way around certain technological programs. These students will become adults in the work place eventually and many jobs these days surround themselves with technology based work ethic.
