Equal Pay Is For Snowflakes In this world there is one thing that is of the utmost importance and that is hard work. It doesn’t matter if one is a millennial who gets participation trophies, the only way to make it in this world is to work. Some may say there is a wage gap, but that’s not real. A wage gap can’t exist because of the Equal Pay Act of 1963. Women have been know to get pregnant, which hinders the work place. While they are out on maternity leave, the male employees have to pick up the slack. Finally, the level of education comes into question which helps make sense of the misconception of a wage gap.

A study done by the U.S. Census comparing education rates from 1950 to 2000 show that less women attended college between 1950 until 1980.(Bureau) Women started off as uneducated workers it was only fair that the men who went to college and studied to be well prepared for a career get paid more. To this day those educated men still have a control for the issues at hand is that the women below them are either uneducated or not fit to handle the job at hand. Women were put into workplaces and had to work their way up without degrees, why give them more pay for that? Now women have begun to become more educated and prepared for a man’s world. Yes, in historical terms there was a wage gap, but now that is in the past.
The past has shaped the way society thinks and what is the correct way to handle “inequalities”. The inequalities seen today are nowhere close to what they were in the 50’s or 60’s, in actuality there aren’t any. Equal pay is a discussion of the past that should stay in the past, the government has acts such as the Equal Pay Act to ensure the protection of women’s pay. The discussion we should be having is why is maternity leave such a hassle or why can’t women understand that they need to be educated in order to be paid
Throughout the world, discrimination in all forms has continued to be a constant struggle; whether it’s racial, gender based, religion, beliefs, appearance or anything that makes one person different from another, it’s an everyday occurrence. A major place that discrimination is occurring at is in the workplace. One of the largest problems discrimination issues is believed to be gender. Women, who have the same amount of experience as men are not getting paid at the same rate as men, these women also are equally trained and educated. According to the article Gender Pay, it was discovered in 2007 that a woman makes 81 cents for every dollar a man earns.(“Gender Pay”) . This shouldn’t be happening in today’s society for the fact the society lived in today is suppose to be more accepting. Men are viewed as being more popular, valuable and having higher powers than women. The Reason Discrimination is involved in the equal pay equal work is because of the significance it has to how some businesses pay their employees.
Women still get paid 77 cents to every dollar that a man makes. This not only perpetuates sexism in an extremely obvious way, it is also one of the most harmful. While being catcalled, or subtly put down can be a detriment to women’s psyche, the wage gap is harmful to a women’s physical and emotional well being. Most people say that in order to make a big career change, the person changing jobs should have enough money saved to live on for a full year. This is a pretty logical idea, however, this is something that is much easier for men to accomplish, given that they are paid a higher wage. They have the ability to put money away, whereas it is more likely that a women is going to have to spend all her wages just on living. She won’t be able to leave a job, even if she hates it, simply because she can not afford to. A man with her same qualifications may not have to worry about this due to the fact that he has on average 23 more cents per every dollar, than she does. This to me seems like the root of sexism, and one of the first things we as a society needs to fix in order to help woman feel more equal in the world.
On the contrary, women still get paid less than men. According to CNN Money, “men still make more than women in most professions -- considerably more in some occupations than others, according to a new study by the job search site Glassdoor”. Although we like to comfort ourselves with the idea that we have gotten our rightfully earned rights, we had not been given bathroom breaks until 1998. Furthermore, employees are still afraid to have a voice in the workforce. Employers establish rules that let laborers know that they are inferior.
There is a pay gap between men and women in the U.S. The pay gap affects women of all educations levels, and backgrounds. Equal pay is a family issue. Women are a huge part of the United States labor force and they are working in positions in fields that are largely dominated by men. When a woman is not paid fairly they do not suffer alone their entire family suffers. To make sure there is a change people most start voting for more wage equality legislation and for the younger population that cannot vote yet they can help the change by speaking out against the wage gap since they are the generation of technology.

When women are actually given the same jobs as men they may be paid the same but typically, they are not able to reach the higher positions in the company that men do. Women have faced gender wage discrimination for decades. The gender pay gap is the difference between what a male and a female earns. It happens when a man and a woman standing next to each other doing the same job for the same number of hours get paid different salaries. On average, full-time working- women earn just “77 cents for every dollar a man earn.” When you compare a woman and a man doing the same job, “the pay gap narrows to 81 percent (81%)” (Rosin). Fifty-one years ago, in order to stop the gender gap discrimination, Congress enacted the Equal Pay Act of 1963. The act states that all women should receive “equal pay for equal work”. Unfortunately, even in 2014 the gender pay gap persists and even at the highest echelons of the corporate; therefore, the equal pay act is a failure.
Creating the idea that if this gap continues to remain constant, or even worse grow, woman will never be able to reach equal pay. A podcast, How the Gender Pay Gap Works, presents us with a critical study done in 2011 in which shows a twenty five year old white woman compared to a twenty five year old white male. In this study both twenty five year olds contained the same qualifications and job title, yet the woman made a significant five thousand dollars less a year. Essentially this means that by the time she makes it to sixty five she will have lost out on four hundred thirty thousand dollars. This outstanding number shines light on the existing problem with women being mistreated and paid in the workforce. Economists and sociologists have explained that the features of the workers only slightly explain the difference. The education and previous experience have a small impact on the wage gap (Gibelman 23). However, there are examples of jobs that do discriminate against women’s wage. Examples of unequal pay include jobs with the government. These jobs pay more than many others, but there is still discrimination. Even with lawyers, there is a discrimination towards women (Gibelman 23). These jobs include higher paying jobs. It is not the minimum wage jobs that discriminate against women, it is some of the top paying jobs. This ties up with how women are seen in the top positions or leadership
