Exhilarated screams and contagious laughter pierce the air. The squeaking and screeching of the rusty old gate travel throughout the playground, as I tower towards it. Sprinting down the crumbly old path, leading to the sand court. There are crowds and clusters of children everywhere. The wind twisting and gusting throughout the awkward side bangs and awful bob haircuts. Recess was by far the most exciting and adventurous part of my second-grade life. Spotting my best friend, Lydia, out of the mass of children, I frantically run up to her and ask her to play Newcomb with me. Creating the idea that if this gap continues to remain constant, or even worse grow, woman will never be able to reach equal pay. A podcast, How the Gender Pay Gap Works, presents us with a critical study done in 2011 in which shows a twenty five year old white woman compared to a twenty five year old white male. In this study both twenty five year olds contained the same qualifications and job title, yet the woman made a significant five thousand dollars less a year. Essentially this means that by the time she makes it to sixty five she will have lost out on four hundred thirty thousand dollars. This outstanding number shines light on the existing problem with women being mistreated and paid in the workforce. This is a large percentage, especially when it is talking about someone 's income level. If people are using their income to support their family, spending the majority on food and other necessities, than how is a single mother suppose to provide for her family if she is not given the opportunity to be fairly compensated. Compensation includes necessities such as, a person 's wage, employer-sponsored health and retirement benefits, training opportunities, work arrangements, and paid family or sick leave (Blau and Kahn). These differences range between education levels and opportunities. The biggest gaps between a compensation levels exists among men and women with advanced degrees, while the smallest gap is present among less educated individuals. Additionally, women are fairly sparse among the highest paying jobs, information services, mining, logging, and utilities, but are extremely represented within the lowest average wage job industries, leisure and hospitality, retail trade, and other services.
