Grand Theory Written Assignment A grand theory can be defined as a theory that is constructed based on the theorist’s research, individual experiences, and insights that illustrates the essence of nursing, along with the mission and goals of nursing. (Meleis, 2018). This paper is going to reflect on the four different types of grand theories that were identified in his book titled: Theoretical Nursing: Development and Progress. The four types of grand theories are identified as: needs, interactions, outcomes, and caring. (Meleis, 2018). She also believed at times the individual may experience sickness or a deficit in which they are unable to care for the self and it is up to the nurse to help them set goals to achieve good health again and care for the self. King believed that the nurse can collaborate with the patient and create a trusting relationship in which the patient then will be able to meet the goals of their care plan and become healthy again. Roy believed that nursing is holistic and that a person is made up of different systems to help them adapt to stressors in the environment around them.

Definition of Nursing Orem defined nursing as an art and that nurses perform actions to help patients provide care for themselves by assisting them or helping them make changes in their care. (Meleis, 2018). King defined nursing as a relationship between the nurse and the patient in which they both communicate, set goals together, and work towards the goals as a team. (Meleis, 2018). Nursing can be defined as the means in which a patient is able to adapt to improve health, quality of life, and if it occurs will die with dignity.
