I would classify the entry entitled, Truth and Method to be my worst entry. I chose this entry because I did not feel I gave enough critical thought in analyzing Gadamer's article. I feel as if I did not take the time to really understand his argument or scope of reasoning. If I could redo this assignment I would not taken the article at face value. I would have properly identified words I did not understand and related them to the importance of the test. I know now of the significance in Philosopher's choice of words and syntax. When I first started reading philosophic works I did not pay attention to structure or form of the author's writing. I was more focused in trying to locate the central argument and trying to understand its premise.
“Naked Lunch” is a play written by Michael Hollinger in 2003. This play is one of the groups of written sixteen plays by several playwrights for Trepidation Nation: A Phobic Anthology, that was produced at the Humana Festival by the Actor Theatre of Louisville in 2002 to 2003. This is a one-act play that is around ten-minute long. It consists of only two actors: one man and one woman with a setting on a small dining area.
Margaret Sanger was the founder of The American League of Birth Control which later became Planned Parenthood and her argument in those times was that it was not fair for women who were from a lower class could not have access to Birth Control.
The novel, Farewell to Manzanar, by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, tells her family’s true story of how they struggled to not only survive, but thrive in forced detention during World War II. She was seven years old when the war started with the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1942. Her life dramatically changed when her and her family were taken from their home and sent to live at the Manzanar internment camp. Along with ten thousand other Japanese Americans, they had to adjust to their new life living behind barbed wire. Obviously, as a young child, Jeanne did not fully understand why they had to move, and she was not fully aware of the events happening outside the camp. However, in the beginning, every Japanese American had questions. They wondered why they had to leave. Now, as an adult, she recounts the three years she spent at Manzanar and shares how her family attempted to survive. The conflict of ethnicities affected Jeanne and her family’s life to a great extent.
Ultimately this assignment was beneficial to my perspective on class issues. It exposed me to multitudes of informational sources ranging from mainstream to alternative. It was also interesting to see the ways in which issues are portrayed differently, and as I mentioned other the lack of blaming the system is extremely interesting. The various sources opened my eyes to the reality of media impact and control over our lives and opinions. It is difficult to see beyond the obvious appeal of corporations such as Wal-Mart, but this should be apparent to me after all these years of sociology. I think this assignment really helped me to think outside the box, and really analyze who has control; it isn’t me or you. That’s for sure.
The topic of this research paper is about Epicurus and how he played a role in Ancient Greece. This assignment had to be done individually. In this research paper I had to do many things. I first had to get sources of my philosopher. I had to obtain two physical sources and a minimum of one internet source. Then when I had my sources I had to write a 2-3 page research paper on philosophy and the role that it played in Ancient Greece pertaining to the value of individuals and the role government should play in society. This took two days for research and a week to type the essay. The critical thinking skills I learned was purpose, question,information, inference, concepts, assumptions, implications, and point of view. I like information the most because in any kind of issue, you have to use information because without information you cannot prove your point, you have to need evidence to support your claim.
Both Sebastian Junger and Jacqueline Adams along with Ken Kostel write about natural disasters and their causes and effects. Although both texts have the same topic they use different strategies to present the topic.
Cotton Mather and John Woolman were two men who had very passionate ideas for the slaves. “Negro Christianized” written by Cotton Mather was an appeal to the slave owners to convert their slaves to Christianity. He primarily focuses on the idea that slaveholders should treat the slaves with dignity and respect along with converting them to Christianity. In John Woolman’s work “Some Considerations On Keeping of Negroes,” he talks about how slavery was detrimental to the slaves and the slave holder. He illustrated through his own conduct the principles of compassion and good will that formed the central message of his itinerant ministry. Which one is more compelling one might ask, to me I think that John Woolman’s work was more compelling because he received the revelation that we must start with our children first in order to abolish slavery. Mather idea of slavery was genuine, but he lacked the overall revelation of how the slaves should’ve been treated.
In the epic Beowulf, the malevolent Grendel is terrorizing Hrothgar’s men as he reigns over their land for twelve years. He is a creature that is feared by all and is very unforgiving. The way Grendel goes about his life, the way he kills people without remorse is inhumane. But with this knowledge we have of Grendel as a monster, the question arises of what really defines the monster. Society’s idea of a monster ranges anywhere from animals of a greater strength than humans, to beings with deformities that cause them to look ‘abnormal’. All ideas of a monster come down to one basic idea; they are entities that provoke fear. Grendel fits this archetype well, as he is a symbol of the Dane’s fear of an “evil”, overpowering, invading force in their kingdom.
In regards to the course, I believe I have experienced the greatest improvement in my willfulness to write. It is not a dreadful task anymore, and instead, a way to expressing my feelings and thoughts. This has helped my performance in all classes since it is now easy to explain my logic through my writing. Nevertheless, writing will always be a learning process. As I continue to learn more challenging and thought-provoking material, it has become just as difficult to defend my viewpoints in the most attentive way possible. However, I have made it a priority to continue working on expressing myself and thoughts through writing.
People use the word okay nearly every day. It is a word that everyone knows and uses due to its vast meanings. To be okay, is what Gary D. Schmidt’s novel Okay for Now really tries to get readers to understand. He poses the question: just what does “okay for now” mean? These answers are found through examining the characters in the store. While, okay can mean many different things, being okay means that the person is in a state where while things are not perfect, but they are tolerable and satisfactory and can improve.
It is of no surprise to anyone that people in general, particularly Americans, tend to be overly-enticed by materialistic things and ridiculous ideals, placing more emphasis on them than things of sentiment. In “On Dumpster Diving,” author Lars Eighner develops on his experiences as a homeless man not in an attempt to defend the art of Dumpster diving, but instead to build upon the idea that a majority of people spend too much time and money on things that will not matter in a few years—they should instead focus on things that will never lose their value. Throughout the essay, he is attempting to persuade his audience that they should change their regular way of thinking and let go of materialistic things in order to live a better, more sound, and overall healthier life. To develop this purpose, Eighner utilizes juxtaposition, exemplification, and definition.
Graphic designer and typographer Stefan Sagmeister has always had a unique way of viewing the world, therefore has created designs that are both inventive and controversial. He is an Austrian designer, who works in New York but draws his design inspiration while traveling all over the world. While a sense of humor consistently appears in his designs as a frequent motif, Sagmeister is nonetheless very serious about his work. He has created projects in the most diverse and extreme of ways as a form of expression. This report will analyse three of Stefan’s most influential designs, including the motives and messages behind each piece.
Hoping for the best but expecting the worst, I walked in to English not knowing what to expect. English 111 was boring at times but in many ways helpful. College Composition I main objective is to teach students the fundamentals of academic writing and critical thinking. Aside from learning how to academically write, recognizing grammatical errors, tone, and different styles such as MLA, APA, and CMS, are some other things learned in the course. This essay will be evaluating the book as a whole, self-reflections, essays, my strengths and weaknesses and my professor.
As a first year college student this course has taught me many core aspects to writing and critical thinking. Writing has not been one my strongest points in education, but I feel this course has helped me make strides in writing in many ways. This course has enlightened me on various aspects of writing and has taught me many different ways of writing quality essays. A few things that this course has taught me is how construct an acceptable thesis statement, how to prove my points in body paragraphs, and how to properly cite sources. Although I have learned an immense deal of writing skills within this course there some things I feel I can improve upon, such as, introductions and properly heading papers.
The sample that I chose from my Application of Literature and Writing class is my 1984 reflection. When I did my first draft of this assignment over the summer it was very below par; however, after I went back to school I learned a much more successful way of writing papers and applied what I learned to my final draft. My final grade for this assignment was a 50/50 or 100%. This assignment helped me realize that I still have much to learn before I graduate and that I need to stay open-minded about new information. I will not only use the skills I learned about how to write a professional paper when writing papers in college, but I will also stay more opened-minded about different perspectives throughout my entire life.
