Hoping for the best but expecting the worst, I walked in to English not knowing what to expect. English 111 was boring at times but in many ways helpful. College Composition I main objective is to teach students the fundamentals of academic writing and critical thinking. Aside from learning how to academically write, recognizing grammatical errors, tone, and different styles such as MLA, APA, and CMS, are some other things learned in the course. This essay will be evaluating the book as a whole, self-reflections, essays, my strengths and weaknesses and my professor. Every English 111 textbook should consist of three main things: the proper way to write an academic essay, review of proper grammar, mechanics word usage and a short transition chapter of the difference between writing in high school and college writing. Successful College Writing by Kathleen T. McWhorter has many of the essentials but noticed it lacked examples of a noble essay. All throughout class students critiqued essays but never actually saw an example of a good, noteworthy complete essay. Having examples of what a person shouldn’t do in an essay is always beneficial but should be followed by a precise academic essay. How are the student supposed to improve their academic writing skills if they have nothing to go by? Just because the book lacks a few of the basic essentials doesn’t mean the book itself will not be beneficial in any way. The book as a whole is pleasing but still has room for revisions. The four articles I did a self-reflection for are titled A Brush with Reality: Surprises in the Tube, Snoopers at Work, A Secret Life on the McJob: Fast Food Managers and Shitty First Drafts. I enjoyed all of the articles in a way but ... ... middle of paper ... ...you want to better your academic writing not if you need to learned the different writing formats or need assistance in grammar. Writing this evaluative essay is both beneficial to the teacher and the TCC English Department. The professor because she had given us a chance to critique her and tell her, her strengths and weakness of her teaching; it favored the English department because they now know how effective the textbook is and how effective this class is to the students actually taking it. Because I had a teacher who was willing to help when in need, English 111 wasn’t as hard as others portrayed it to be. I had a good professor, peers, and the writing center to help me with this class. I hope to continue to be successful in the second part of the course. Although I do not enjoy writing essays this is an essay I enjoyed writing.
In Patricia Limerick’s article “Dancing with Professors”, she argues the problems that college students must face in the present regarding writing. Essays are daunting to most college students, and given the typical lengths of college papers, students are not motivated to write the assigned essays. One of the major arguments in Limerick’s article is how “It is, in truth, difficult to persuade students to write well when they find so few good examples in their assigned reading.” To college students, this argument is true with most of their ...
...lt material and write a five page paper on it, it was much simple so this was a new and difficult concept. I got valuable skills out this class, experience in research, using citations and glimpse into reading material for college. Getting experience with this will be beneficial in my future college language art classes. At the beginning of writing 121 I knew it was going to be hard but I thought I wouldn’t enjoy the material. Quite the contrary, reading Chekhov’s stories were difficult to understand but very interesting because I wasn’t used to reading material in that format or maybe I had but hadn’t really given it much thought. I also found the articles addressing poverty interesting. It was interesting seeing different writers perspective on the issue then arguing my own. The experience and knowledge I have gained will be valuable in my future college paper.
Being a new teacher of English, I find the assessment of compositions to be a concept I question and struggle with on a regular basis. Having consulted several colleagues, mentors, administrators, and fellow graduate students, I have come to the conclusion that there is no easy answer to this tedious yet ever important question. While there are many inlets and outlets to this dilemma, for the sake of time I will touch on only three. While all three are very different in terms of concepts, rituals, and conducts, they all come together to one common goal - helping students express themselves in terms of writing.
English 122 has been a challenging class for me to learn about my writing and researching techniques. This essay is about how the assignments help me with my writing and which assignments are challenging for me.
Not only does the chapter “Introduction to students” help inform a student on tips to improve their reading skills but the chapter also contains a section for helping students improve on their own skills as writers as well. On 9-10 of 50 Essays, One very helpful piece of advice is that “instead of trying to put a piece together out of thin air” but in be more patient and take your
My analysis over the development of my writing throughout this semester. I will assess many aspects of my experiences with English 1301 up to this point in the semester. I will explain the ways by which I have blossomed as a writer during this time. I will provide brief examples of my work to show what I am basing the evaluation of my writing on. What my conceptions of writing were, at the start of, the semester and compare it to what they are now. I will clarify how my work this semester reflects the concepts of writing and reading we have been working on and studying in class. I will tell about what and how particular reading assignments have been influential in my growth of creative ideas. Lastly, my interpretation of what it means to be a writer, and how my experiences this semester has influenced my opinion on writing.
English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Throughout the English 101 course I have been able to improve as a writer by composing essays
Transitioning from high school to college can be overwhelming. Before English 1301, I thought that I did not have to worry about being prepared for college. I quickly realized that my little background in writing essays was not going to be enough for college. Writing is not just something that I will use in English classes. In college, I will have to use effective writing skills in all my classes to complete research papers, essay tests and communicate to professors. Throughout my education, writing strategies persisted to be something that did not come easy to me. I dreaded writing because I could never find ways to get my thoughts down on paper. Ironically, a class that petrified me due to the amount of writing that was required ended up helping me in so many ways. English 1301 and my professor prepared me so much for college and real life.
English Composition II has unexpectedly improved my writing into an academic level. As I studied various English reading and writing courses, this class “English Composition II” did not immediately caught my eye. However as I researched about the concepts of this class, the decision to make was not so difficult since I was lacking in critical thinking and the interpretation of works. Also as a Business Major, it made sense that the subject of English would be of interest to me and as a career requirement. During the first weeks, I thought that I would be fully prepared for this course after taking an accelerated course in English during the spring semester. However, after attending class for about a month, I certainly did not expect to learn an entirely new process of writing
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101 taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was required.
As my English 101 class comes to an end, I have realized how much I have transformed as a writer. In this essay, I am going to explain what I realized my strengths and weaknesses are as a writer and how they have manifested themselves throughout the quarter. I was skeptical at first coming into this class knowing that English takes formidable work and dedication, but I am very proud of the progress I have made. We completed a great deal of work throughout the quarter; from grammar exercises, summary reviews, and two challenging essays. Throughout the quarter I found myself improving in each category. As a writer, my skills and confidence have developed into more clarity and thought, something I have always wanted to be, as a result of a well constructed class that led to a superb educational experience.
Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. Improving your writing skills is important, in every English class that’s the main teaching point; to help students improve their writing skills. Throughout my college experience I have acknowledge that
...larify the structure and destination in which I was headed. By revising my essays I was able to make the content and message seem more important and made the final drafts seem a slight degree better than the originals, but the finals were better nonetheless. The instructor did a very good job in guiding me and helping find my way into writing by focusing on some of the problems I was facing and clarified them so that I would better understand them. The instructor helped me expand on my grammatical by helping me discover what it was that I lacked while constructing basic sentence structure; the usage of commas and semi-colons, quotations, and how to sight titles of books and articles within an essay. This English 101 course I have attended has helped me develop better writing skills as well as helped me create more profound essays and a very satisfying research paper.
Overall, I have learned so much in English 111 and I have really enjoyed being in your class. Everything I have learned will help stay with me in my continuing years of college. I hope I have proven to you that the things you taught actually did help, and I gained so much knowledge about myself as a writer and a communicator. Your lectures were very interesting and you made them pleasant to learn. Thank you for a great semester.
