From Adolescent to Adult: An Epiphany in a Dealership Becoming the person I am today and overcoming all the roadblocks and detours life has thrown at me, was not easy. An epiphany that has helped change me into a more independant woman, transpired in the office of a dealership. At that moment is when it dawned on me that I’d officially entered adulthood. My significant other, however, sees my move from New York to Connecticut as my most significant and life changing experience. Both of our perspectives were definitely important milestones in my life, but one seemed to tip the scale more than the other . A very significant milestone that occurred in my life was the purchase of my first car with my own money. I know some might think that buying a car isn’t that serious or such an achievement, but to me it was. It was important to me because not only did I work hard to save up enough money but I also payed for my car in full. Now this wasn’t easy. I had to discipline myself to not go shopping on the weekends & to only spend money when I really needed to. Knowing that no one helped me to get my car and that I no longer had to depend on anyone gave me a feeling of independence and freedom. What led her to make that decision, was her acceptance into a program at the Yale Peabody Museum. Her involvement in that program is what drew her to the study of neurobiology, which is now her intended major. That experience also allowed her to obtain scholarships and be able to work at the museum. Throughout history and literature women are often referred to as birds, especially those of domesticated species. Women being referred to as a pet corresponded to the rise of patriarchal society, “… from this point, civilization has seemed to trap women in stereotypes related to nature which are domesticated, like caged birds” (Clark 342). Women had to fit into the roles society formed for them, trapping them in a lifestyle not appealing to all women. There are various changes that can occur in an individual’s life. Some variations are very little and would not affect your lifecycle very greatly. Nevertheless, other events could be very significant and could change a person’s entire life, such as marrying, giving birth to the baby, or losing someone special. The important event that transformed my life is coming to the United States of America to get education and to study. When I first arrived in this country, I comprehended that an incredible change would happen in my life both mentally and physically. After living more than one year in the United States, I definitely believe that moving to the United States is an advantageous change for me. This change offers me an opportunity to live a healthy lifestyle as well as a new way of thinking that are significant for me and the most importantly it provided me a better education in a simple way.
In summary reflexivity relates to judgements made from one's own personal experiences. By being reflexive and recognising that I am part of the research data and through exploring my own practice with the intention of understanding my practice, I show how I am part of the research. With this new knowledge I continue knowing differently that my story is my data and as such the application of reflection/reflexivity, in such a way as Bolton, Freire and Cuncliffe suggests, will make it all the richer and more valuable.

I had to go back to my country and come back to campus really feel the change I went through during the first year in college. I had to observe and interact with the first years to perceive the similarities between them and my old self, to see how I have changed and the extent to which humans are all alike. We might face the same struggles, but the ways we deal with them vary from person to person. I will try to tell my version of growing up in Lafayette.
When I was younger, I always wanted to be an adult. I was fortunate enough to have enjoyed a happy childhood, but something about being an adult mesmerized me. As I've gotten older, however, I've realized the naivety of this misconception and I've seen the struggles of adulthood firsthand.Back then, I had no idea that my transition to adulthood would occur much sooner than expected and in a way that no one should have to endure. When I was sixteen years old, my transition to adulthood was marked by my unexpected responsibility as a caregiver for my ill mother.
Intersectionality is a term used to describe a situation whereby an individual has multiple identities and as result, the person feels that he or she doesn’t belong to one community or another. Because of the many conflicts in an individual’s identities, he or she could be a victim of multiple threats of discrimination (Williams, 2017). The discrimination could be a result of race, gender, age, health and ethnicity among others. To give an example, a black transgender woman could be discriminated in the workplace because of being black and also because she is transgender. From an intersectionality perspective, the woman faces multiple threats of discrimination because of the overlapping identities of gender and race and therefore the transwoman faces a bigger struggle (Barber, 2017). Transwomen of color will most likely encounter prejudices in the form of homophobia, racism or sexism in many dimensions of their life. The perspective of intersectionality is not only applicable to women but it can also be applied to males. Emerging adults are always in the search of their own identity while experimenting with their life, love life and career path. Constant changes in emerging adult’s life are common. From changing residential place to love life, work and education, instability often presents during emerging adulthood (Santrock, 2013). In addition, emerging adults tend to place focus on themselves where they have no commitment and responsibilities toward others. This provides them a great chance to exercise their own will and to execute their plans for the future. During emerging adulthood, many feel like as if they do not belong to either adolescents or adult. The transition ends only when they have distinct marks of an adult. According to Arnett (as cited in Santrock, 2014), “emerging adulthood is the age of possibilities” (p. 296). It is obvious that most parents around the globe like their children to be educated. In today’s world, education means higher living standards due to the globalization of industry and competence. My parents are an example for such ambition of pushing children into the intimacy of studying to guarantee a sustainable future. Even thought my family lives in one of the highly educated districts in Baghdad, most parents in this district believe that education is a subjective matter. Therefore, the only goal of students in my district is to attain a minimum passing grade because nobody asks them more than that, even their teachers. In other words, students consider school as a community to have fun instead of earning knowledge. The main reason for such behavior is due to the political situation of Iraq before 2003. At that time, even though a person may hold a degree in engineering, he would work for the government with little salary that is not enough for living. First event that I accomplished was when I got my high school diploma. Even though finishing high school was not an easy task for me, those days were the best moments of my life. I always knew that if I would finish high school and then hold the diploma in my hands I would always make my parents and of course feel very proud. My parents are proud because I am their oldest child and I am the first who graduated high school successfully. This is my first year in college, I am majoring biology, and some day I would have not a high school graduation but I would be a graduate from college. My dream is to be a physician assistant. I hope that some day I will achieve all of my goals. When I would get my degree it would be one of my greatest accomplishments.
One great example of a major change within on of my group settings is with my friend group. This major change happened when I graduated from college and I no longer was with my group of friends all of the time. While in school, we lived together and did everything together. We would spend almost all day with each other. However, when we graduated we all moved back home, which was all over the east coast. Three of us lived in three different parts of New Jersey, while one lived in Rhode Island, one in New York, and the other in Pennsylvania. We went from seeing each other non stop to only being able to all be together a few times during the year. Although it was upsetting, we had to learn how to communicate in different ways. We also
Childhood and adulthood are two different, but equally important times in our lives. The special moments such as learning how to ride a bike, or pulling out your teeth, and ding dong ditching your neighbor's house, are all memories that come to mind when thinking about childhood. Graduating high school, applying to college, buying your first car or first house all bring back adulthood recaps of your life, and while both of these are very major and unforgettable moments apart of our lives, I’m going to talk about how similar and different these times really are.
