It is obvious that most parents around the globe like their children to be educated. In today’s world, education means higher living standards due to the globalization of industry and competence. My parents are an example for such ambition of pushing children into the intimacy of studying to guarantee a sustainable future. Even thought my family lives in one of the highly educated districts in Baghdad, most parents in this district believe that education is a subjective matter. Therefore, the only goal of students in my district is to attain a minimum passing grade because nobody asks them more than that, even their teachers. In other words, students consider school as a community to have fun instead of earning knowledge. The main reason for such behavior is due to the political situation of Iraq before 2003. At that time, even though a person may hold a degree in engineering, he would work for the government with little salary that is not enough for living. To go there, I used to wake up at 6:00 am in the morning and leave the house at 6:30. The distance between my home and school is about 10km, but the bus had to undergo a series of checkpoints that requires a significance of time. My mother would always prepare breakfast for me before leaving the house. Even if I was late, she used to put the breakfast in a sandwich and say “eat it now, the school will not fly if you were late.” She would never let me leave without finishing it. My mother believes in traditions that she inherited from her family. She used to through water after me when I leave the house for school. She believed that this would help me to come back home
Academic excellence is the primary desire of every parent and student. However, there are varying perceptions of the role of education in the life of and individual. According to the survey carried out on the perception of the role of education in the life of an individual, it was established that eight out of ten students were of the view that they pursued education for the purpose of economic gains. Additionally, six out of ten students viewed education as serving the purpose of broadening their view and perceptions in life. Accordingly, the widening of the will help them rethink their ideas and values. This essay will focus on the reasons why students attend college and barriers to education in light of the book Rereading America.

There is enough support to say that people who have received better education have gotten further in life. Even our president Barack Obama has spoken about how important it is to make sure the children are being educated to their fullest. Learning the ability of critical thinking and problem-solving gives way towards national prosperity. (Bok, Higher Education) It is easy to see that there is a strong urge to get the best education you can receive for a reason. Education is and will always be an important factor within our society.
I had to go back to my country and come back to campus really feel the change I went through during the first year in college. I had to observe and interact with the first years to perceive the similarities between them and my old self, to see how I have changed and the extent to which humans are all alike. We might face the same struggles, but the ways we deal with them vary from person to person. I will try to tell my version of growing up in Lafayette.

I didn’t know whether it was the cold pizza, the half eaten oreos cluttering my bed, or my best friend sitting next to me that made me realize what was going on, but the way we laughed told me that this moment was the best. It was the thing that showed me to open up. In my life, everything had always been such a hard thing to do. Anxiety was holding me back from being able to open myself up and be who I wanted to be. My life was a constant struggle of things being “to be, or not to be”-- but when I had met Rachel Gone, things for me changed in a totally different way.
When we pulled up to the house we weren’t sure if it was the right house. We got out the car and one little puppy ran to my feet. My dad said, “I think we are at the right house”. There were ten puppies; they were so adorable. We were at that house to pick out a puppy for my mom after the accident. We picked two puppies out and named them Bonnie and Clyde.
Born and raised in an Indonesian average family, I have seen a lot of people my age not getting an adequate education. Luckily my mother values the education level of her children. She made us read kids’ magazines, continuously giving us books to read, and send us to an international school. I have understood the value of education since a very young age. Neither of my parents had the opportunity to attend college; because of this they struggled in their professional lives.
As the artist Kelly Clarkson says, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” Everyone goes through situations in their lives that draws them closer to a family member. Sometimes everyone needs someone to lean on. You need to lean on your friends or family members to stay strong. Two events in my life caused me to become a lot closer to my mom than I already was, because she felt the pain too. In 2007, when I had just turned eight years old, my father passed away very suddenly. Then, in 2012, Hurricane Sandy came and destroyed our entire house. These two events caused my mother and I to be very close because we both knew what each other was going through.
Pressures on children in today’s society are a problem that is becoming more evident in academics as parents and teachers put more and more emphasis on these children to outperform their classmates, stress in the child’s life becomes an interfering problem (Anxiety.org, 2011 Weissbourd, 2011,). From preschool children to college adults, pressure to execute academic perfection extends across all areas of curriculum. Our education system is one of the most respectable, reputable and sought after commodity's in our society, but it is also the most over crowded, discriminatory, and controversial system ever established. Most people yearn for a higher education because it's what's expected in this society in order to get ahead. It means a better job, more money, power, prestige and a sense of entitlement. But this system has let down the children that are supposed to benefit from it. Education discriminates against minorities, and poorer class students are not expected nor encouraged to attain a higher education. The education system is set up to ensure that every child get a basic education, but there are many boundaries and social settings that make this almost impossible to achieve. To many students the thought of higher education is just a dream that seems unattainable, but with positive affirmation we can help all children excel. First, we have to recognize the problems associated with the school system then maybe we can work to resolve them.
Children around the world are being educated every day but some betters then others. What point in life does one have the incentive to be educated? For many they have the desire to be educated when they are young and in school. Others don’t desire to learn until they are no longer children. The entire purpose of the education system is to obtain knowledge and learn at higher levels. Then why do people not want to learn when they are in school in today’s society? This lack of interest of motivation or emotional support from the teachers, family and School system could be keeping kids from wanting to learn. In his essay “School vs. Education,” Russell Baker seems to believe that our system of education needs great improvement in the way we go about educating are students in today’s society. Schools and parents need more support educating students in each different stage of education throughout their life.
Our society is being forced to deal with uneducated, illiterate high school graduates. You may ask how is a high school graduate so ill prepared for the world. Have you ever been to a store where a young person, maybe a high school student is the sales associate and the register shuts down right before you receive your change? Did you notice the look of panic on their face because they were not sure how much change you were supposed to receive? It is because of the national crisis, social promotion that can be accredited to this dependency on everything except their educated brain’s. We as educated people must help find a way to save our children from wasting their academic careers due to social promotion. "Truly embracing the idea that all children can learn and making sure that all children do, requires that we all take responsibility for ending social promotion." (www.ed.gov) If we accept and aim to prove that all people are capable of learning life’s basic necessities we will start breaking down the wall of stupidity social promotion has built.
My aspiration toward a better education starts all the way back to when I started school in Russia. Out of the short educational experience that I had in Russia, I remember that almost everybody wanted to be the straight-A student (or straight-"5" by Russian grading). That, combined with the constant pressure from my family helped me get excited about school and made me want to learn. My education in Russia was cut short, however, when we moved to the United States.
