Introduction to topic
This assignment focuses on the topic on maintaining respect and dignity when bed bathing elderly people in hospital.
The Royal College of Nursing (RCN, 2008) defined dignity as the way people feel, think and act in regards to how they valued themselves and others. Treating someone with dignity means treating them with worth, value and making them feel respected. It is imperative for all nursing team to treat people with dignity in respective of their health status. A dignified care should be given even after death. Walsh and Kowanko (2002) states that sustaining patients’ dignity is an extraordinary and fundamental basic of nursing care which is admired by patients.
Working with the Interprofessional Learning (IPL) group, which consist of students who have different perspectives in health has increased my knowledge and understanding of interpersonal skills. The skills acquired will be needed in maintaining dignity and respect within the healthcare sector. A lot of views were shared and discussed within the IPL group to establish good practice. I have a clear view of how research is interactive which generates more learning interest. I have the perspective to improve myself, keep informed in my profession. The experience I had during the process and completion of my assignment on research has allowed me to learn more about the importance of research. I have confidence in the knowledge acquired during the IPL group will be tremendously appreciated in anything I attempt in the future study. I am comfortable working as part of a team and I learnt how each profession is directly dependent on the other to ensure a good service is rendered to the people with respect and dignity.
