Listening to people's problems and giving them medication puts the job description of a psychiatrist in very simple terms, but getting there isn’t easy and neither is actually being there. The educational requirements that one must have before successfully becoming a psychiatrist include many years of college, and training. Firstly, one going into psychiatry will need to meet the needs of medical school (biology, chemistry, math, and physics). I was born in a small town of -----------of underdeveloped country of Bangladesh. I grew up speaking Bengali, wore traditional clothes, created intricate henna designs on women’s hands, and performed classical Bengali music. Since childhood, thought other than becoming a doctor never registered in my mind. My high grades in high school helped me to obtain admission in one of the most desirable place to learn Medicine, Mayemen Medical College.
The career path that I want to pursue is in the medical field. I major in psychology and minor in biology because going to medical school has always been my desire. Being a pediatrician is my goal I wish to conquer. I am beyond interested and passionate about this career. It is not just a career, it is my life dreams. I want to be able to enjoy going to work every day knowing I love my job and I am here because I want to. Being a pediatrician I am able to work with children and many people of different cultures. I am thrilled to know that I will be capable of caring for sick children.
To become a psychiatrist, students desiring this job, would have to obtain a bachelor degree in science, a year of organic and inorganic chemistry, a year of biology, a year of mathematics and one year of physics. The student would be in school for 12 years, to learn everything about psychiatry. The student would have to obtain a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) or Doctor of Medicine (MD). To become a psychiatrist, The student would have to do the same training as a doctor would. The student will learn about the body as well as the mind and how to treat all types of illnesses. The student will have to pass internal medicine, neurology, emergency medicine and many other courses. When deciding on which sub-specialty, The student could choose between: emergency psychiatry, neuropsychiatry and many more. After acquiring a D.O. or an M.D., the student will have to spend four years in residency, which means getting hands-on experience with patients. Psychiatrists treat patients who have mental illnesses and help diagnose them. They strive to find solutions for their patient's mental disorders. It can and usually does, involve counseling for the patient and sometimes their family as well. Medication can be prescribed to help with chemical imbalances, some of these are caused by their emotional problems. Sometimes even shock therapy is given. It can be a take home job much of the time. Psychiatrists do a lot of side work and research to expand their knowledge. Most keep updated on the latest data and new medications available. To be a licensed mental health counselor a person must have a Masters Degree in counseling or other related field. The program must consist of 60 semester hours and 1000 hours of university sponsored clinical or internship experience. The degree program should be certified by CACREP. A CACREP certified program insures that the program meets examination requirements for licensure. Once completed, one must have two years of supervision and pass national or state examinations to obtain licensure.

Even though psychiatrists must go through many years of school and training, all of their hard work is pays off knowing that they help people every day.
