My desire to become a nurse is driven by my long-standing passion for helping others and making a difference. This is a profession I have aspired to be a part of since I began my GCSE’s and so I chose subjects that could help dictate my future profession. Biology captured my interest and led me to research further into careers in the healthcare industry. It was from that moment I was determined to become a nurse.
My current college course has helped me to develop as an effective health care practitioner as it has built upon my interpersonal skills, communication skills and has enabled me to convey myself in a professional manner. The course has also helped me to increase my courage and confidence in public speaking; these are all valuable skills that will help me thrive in a nursing career. …show more content…

A week placement at Good Hope Hospital allowed me to shadow many professions such as nurses, doctors, pharmacist and other types of therapists. This gave me an insight into the more practical element of nursing and how each patient is treated based on their individual circumstances, including the different methods of communication, as well as the use of room and bed names to maintain patient confidentiality. I observed the set practices and policies that were followed to ensure the best care was given. Coming away from my seemingly short 8 hour shifts at the hospital, I had confirmed my decision to become a nurse. This fantastic experience allowed me to understand the career and aid my decision. In addition to this, working at the Age UK day centre allowed me to recognise the importance of maintaining dignity, how a disease can have a variety of impacts on individuals and the importance of health and safety in healthcare
