Reflecting on module 5 during my time at the Non Commission Officer Academy, I was able to learn and enforce lesson principles to improve my ability to become a more adaptable leader. One lesson principle that I valued the most was the three different elements of adaptability. The reason why I value this principle the most is because I feel that if we are more self aware of how to adapt, or ways to adapt, we will have the knowledge to actually incorporate it. The ability of a leader to change how they think, for example, is the first element listed in Course 15. The basic meaning of this principle is that the person has developed an ability to think of multiple concepts or ideas; moreover, they make changes due to unforeseen circumstances. To control your emotions and to also be aware of your peer or subordinate’s emotions is vital to the progress to becoming a great leader. If a subordinate feels that you are just dismissive of how they feel, they will not come to you for feedback or vice versa, they will most likely provide it. Finally, the last element of an adaptive leader is dispositional adaptability. Every good leader is also a follower; being a good leader is not just a one-way street. The ability or having the characteristic to remain optimistic, but realistic (course 15) is in my opinion very vital. How many times have you worked in a shop and have to complete a task that just does not make sense to you? Do you complain about it for 10 minutes? Or do you complete the task and believe there is a reason why. Keeping a good attitude and remaining optimistic can sway and give you “buy in”
Adaptive leadership is becoming widespread in the United States Army amongst junior officers in leadership positions that require quick thinking and innovation. Leonard Wong discusses how the versatile and unpredictable enemy and situations in Iraq produces adaptable junior officers. These officers are learning to make decisions under chaotic conditions and are becoming more mentally agile. The Army is changing. The Army is transforming its capabilities in the war in Iraq to be effective and successful. General Schoomaker states that we will not accomplish our goals as a nation in the 21st century unless our Army becomes much more agile but with the capacity for long term, sustained level of conflict. The Army is in the process of eliminating its old ways of war, it has to become somewhat of a decathlete. Trained for multiple events across a broad spectrum not just one event like a track athlete.
A leadership theory is a clarification of some features of leadership; theories have practical importance as they are being used for better understanding, anticipating, and controlling successful leadership. Hence, the main principle of any theory is to inform practice(Lussier and Achua 2009). Leadership theories could be classified into eight main categories: Great man, trait, behavioral, contingency, Situational, Participative, Relationship , management (Cherry 2010).
In summation, I believe an adaptable leader employs flexible leadership qualities and contours their approach based on the situation to effectively accomplish the mission. If only I can encompass the principles in that statement, I believe, given the time, I can greatly enhance my abilities as a well-rounded adaptable leader. Making the constant effort and being aware of myself, my leaders, my peers, and my subordinates will ultimately allow me to grow both personally and professionally. In the end it is about the people we work with regardless of their position. Understanding these individuals, their expectations and their goals, is the key. With so many different individuals, adaptation is integral to ensuring we get the bestout of each and every person each and every day.
The idea of what’s morally right and wrong changes within each culture whether an organizational culture or between individuals. However, the best leaders are the ones who do what’s right and best for the organization. During this research paper I will attempt to define the term leadership style and its concept. Moreover, I will attempt to describe three leadership styles, the development and the process one would follow to modify their leadership style. When pertaining to myself, I never saw myself as a leader but I will attempt to describe my leadership style and the advantages and disadvantage I would have in a business environment.
In order to explain the adaptive leadership in the case of Mihailovic I will briefly review the essence of adaptation and adaptive leadership.
Many organizational theorists concur that existence of effective leadership is one of the important contributors to the overall organizational success. Leadership is defined as “a process of social influence by which an individual enlists the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a task or mission" (Chemers, 1997). According to Stogdill (1957) he defined leadership as the individual behaviour to which guides a group to the achievement of a common objective. In the process the leader influences the organization members through a series of interpersonal interactions in which they seek to inspire the organizational members towards attaining organizational goals. Great leadership doesn’t necessarily come from what you do, but instead from how you do it. According to Goleman, Boyatzis, and McKee 's (2013) book, Primal Leadership, this "how" of a great leader comes through the heart or emotions. If leaders fail at driving emotions in the right direction, nothing they do, even if they get everything else just right, will be as successful as it could or should be (p. 3). There are a few different types of well known leadership styles, authoritarian, delegative, and democratic. To assess my leadership style I used two online tests to help me determine my style. I felt the results were accurate and I fall into a democratic style/participative style. If I am leading I prefer to include the group and get their feedback on solving issues. However, I still make the final decision after listening to the thoughts of the group on a particular topic. This is considered to be a positive style of leadership that is inspiring to the group involved. The leaders decision making tends to be more accurate due to the input of other experts. (Cite)
Over the course of my professional career in different organizations in the past three years, I have worked under many managers. This has been a learning curve for me to understand the different managing styles and leadership characteristics of people. One of the managers whom I worked under, was the lead in a government project which also happened to be my last project before I took a break for continuing my studies, is a person I admire till date. I learned several life lessons in addition to the technical subject associated with the industry. This paper demonstrates the leadership styles exhibited by my manager with suitable examples.

However, I believe that it is better said to be a way of influencing others actions. Leadership is usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Throughout the semester for my leadership class, I have expanded the knowledge in numerous ways. I now have fully understanding of the purpose and process of leadership to a society. They are able to inspire, stimulate, persuade, shape, and have an effect on others.
First of all, I would like to mention my inability to control emotions and react efficiently to other people’s problems and worries. Very often, I am unable to make the right decision due to the immediate confusion and fear to lose time. Therefore, I would like to learn to analyze the situations and react moderately and wisely to every event and situation. Additionally, I would like to amplify my leading qualities and provide good solutions and ideas for the effective handling of my studies, work and personal life. In order to achieve this, I should read relevant literature, learn from the examples of great leaders and develop my strategies of effective organization and leadership.
