As I reflect and look at my career journey, I realize that I have not really had a career journey. I have held a few jobs; however, I have not had a job I would consider my career yet. Furthermore, I only worked for a couple of months in each of the jobs I had in the past. Currently, I do not have a job yet, and I realize that I am now 24 years of age and should be starting my way to my career. However, I have not looked into jobs in my career field because I feel as though I am not ready yet to start working in my field. I was only seventeen when I started working. I lived in a very small city that I downtown area full of different stores. During the summer times, most of the stores downtown would post job listings looking for young individuals who wanted to work during the summer season. I decided that I wanted to gain some work experience and decided to apply in one of the stores. The store I worked in was called Kid City; it was a clothing store for children. I enjoyed the job I had in the beginning; all I did was open up boxes and placed the clothes in the racks so the store associates could hang them up on the store racks. I enjoyed the job because I did not have to deal with the customers that came into the store. It is simple to look at an individual’s life and analyze and critique their choices based on our own opinions and experiences. Is that fair? No. We may see their actions clearly but the reasoning behind these is what we should focus on when it comes to judging someone’s behavior or circumstances. A common judgment made about a person is based on their career. In our society, it would behoove us to look at the path that leads to becoming a doctor instead of a drug dealer.
The objective of this paper is to disclose how my career aspirations will align with the Adult Education program. The Adult Education program is important, because it provides a source for me to exercise my professional purpose. “Helping adult learners become successful one student at a time” is my professional purpose. I strive to make a difference in other lives, which drives me to contribute more than I have personally. As far back as I could remember, I was always in a rush to grow up and be responsible. I was about thirteen when I realized I wanted a job, so I could have my own money. I’d even fill out applications online, lying about my age but it never worked. A few birthdays went by and I was celebrating my sixteenth birthday and a few weeks later; I received my first retail job. My very first job was at a popular teen store called Aeropostale. I learned and experienced a lot working there and made friends as well. Although, I got what I desired, I often had uncertainties once I really got the feel for the part-time position. I worked for a friend once, and I thought it was the best decision I had ever made. The job was going to be babysitting her kids as often as she needed. Not just one or two kids, but three children, of various ages. I was a little anxious because it was my first job after high school, but I was excited to get started. According to the study of this course, I have learned many useful management skills and I feel like these skills will be applied to my future career development. When working on the self- assessment tests, I found myself fall into the category of the ISTJ personality types, which as illustrated by Myers Briggs, is the type of personality that is conscientious, considerate, and helpful. Personality traits such as honest, dutiful, practical and responsible are my strengths; personality traits such as stubborn, insensitive and poor communication skill are my weaknesses. Related to the knowledge I have learned in the course I believe both strengths and weakness will have influence to my future career development. Choosing which career path to follow is one of the most important decision people take in their lifetime. Considering that this decision will affect the entire future life, it is very important to be sure that it is the right one. It is one of the most important steps in order to successfully find a job that would satisfy personality needs and guarantee a steady income. If he or she is passionate about their job, hard work is simplified and high salary helps to concentrate on results. The key about being successful at work is to be in love with it.
