acquaintances, harassment can happen anywhere with anyone at any time. The thing with harassment is that there is equal power and an equal playing field. However, the victim usually doesn’t stand up for themselves, but if they do then that’s where the harassing usually stops. The goal of harassment is essentially to isolate, intimidate, embarrass or even belittle ONE person. There are so many things that harassment is, but there still is a list of things that harassment is not. Bullying and harassment are not when people disagree over beliefs, politics, or any other opinion based thought. Cyber harassment is where people post rumors or gossip online to bring someone down, call someone out or to defame them. Trying to differentiate a difference between cyberbullying and cyber harassment is difficult, but this quote from nobullying.com helps in saying, “According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, one key point in defining and using the terms cyber harassment and cyber bullying is the perpetrator’s age. In most cases, the term cyber bullying refers to unsolicited communications or stalking activities between minors. The term cyber harassment is normally used when adults are involved.” This is great to know, but where do we draw the line between bullying which can be taken care of in house, and harassment which needs to be taken care of by law enforcement official. In an article for The Atlantic, a unanimous writer says, “When our digital space is invaded with sexual harassment, violent messages, and threats; when our private data, information, and photographs are exposed, it feels like it should be against the law.” And it should be against the law, and there are laws coming out protecting people from cyber harassment. Out of a poll taken, 95% of highschool teenagers have seen online harassment, yet chosen not to say anything about it. 68% of those same teenagers said that cyber harassment is serious. With cyberbullying, posting personal, embarrassing, or inappropriate pictures or statuses about someone is very easy because all it takes is a click of a button. One can also do this because it can be done anonymously and it can be difficult to trace it back to the source. All of this is seen by a very broad audience of people, everyone who has a social media account can see what is posted and that is how the victim is exposed. Once a person becomes a victim of cyberbullying it only seems to become worse because what other individuals see they can easily comment on it and throw in their two cents and now everybody at the school is making fun of one’s self.
